ROWING

OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Otago Rowing Association was held last night, Mr W. B. Robinson pcrsicling over a large attendance of club delegates. BURKF.S-ST. LEONARDS REGATTA. The question of rowing the races postponed at the Bnrkes-St. Leonards regatta on February 8 was discussed. Mr T. F. Mackic said he would oppose any suggestion to row the races this season. It would not be fair to the clubs concerned, as the interprovincial eight was composed of senior men from the local clubs. He did not think the eight oar crew should suffer for the sake of the clubs securing cup points. He could not ace .that anything would ho gained by holding the races. Mr F. Kggors suggested that if the races were held, the eight-oar crew could be present, and the members take their places in the respective club crews. Mr E. V. Fairbairn maintained that if the £22 allocated by the Regatta Committee for the races was not worth rowing for now, the association should not have approved of the programme in the first place. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the president and secretary confer with the regatta committee with a view to rowing the races on Saturday, March 21, with the original entries. INTERPROVINCIAL EIGHTS.

The New Zealand Council advised that the interprovincial championship eightoar race would be rowed on the Wanganui River at approximately 1.30 p.m. at elack water on Easter Saturday. The Wanganui Association had decided to allot £25 to the winning crew, £lO to the second and £5 to the third placed crew. The North-South Island Eight-oar Race would also he held provided the council was agreeable to the crews being selected after the interprovincial race had been rowed. The race would be held at approximately 3 p.m., the associations to forward the names of the selectors for each island to the council for approval. The council had decided that there was no objection whatever to the selection of the crews for the NorthSouth Island Race after the Intelprovincial Eights had been rowed. It was decided to write to the Wanganui Association asking for details of the course over which the interprovincial race would be rowed. The association appointed R. Underwood (Port Chalmers) coxswain of the Otago representative eight-oar crew to compete at Wanganui. Mr Fairbairn said that it was essential to send an experienced coxswain to steer the crew on the Wanganui River. Underwood was a very experienced boy. The Wanganui Association advised that arrangements in connection with the Interprovincial Eights had been completed.

QUEENSTOWN REGATTA. The Qucenstown Regatta Club advised that it had been decided to hold the annual regatta at Qucenstown at Easter. A draft programme was submitted for the approval of the association. The Refffttta Club recommended the appointment of Messrs C. R. Caffin and W. G. Glengarry as starter and umpire respectively. The programme was approved, and it was decided to forward the names of Messrs Caffin and W. B. Robinson for the position of starter and umpire respectively for the approval of the Re.gatta Committee. EIGHT-OAR ROWING.

A letter was received from Mr C. G. Herdman, of Auckland, stating that in an endeavour to further eight-oar racing in New Zealand ho would subsidise the cost of each boat to the extent of £lO. This would apply to all clubs in the Dominion which desired to obtain boats for use not later than during the 193037 season. The offer applied to both new or second-hand boats. His main ob-

I ject was to add every boat possible as soon as possible to those already available for eight-oar competition, so that such class events may soon be an accomplished fact at all regattas. The association was asked to notify all the Otago clubs of the offer. It was decided to write and thank Mr Hcrdman for his generous 6ffer. GENERAL. The Auckland Association wrote asking for the association's support in restoring to rowing clubs the privilege of free transport of rowing skill's to regattas. It was stated that the heavy charges made for carriage of boats by the railway affected the entries at regattas.—The opinion was expressed that it was a move in the right direction, and it was decided to support the Auckland Association in every possible way. The Canterbury Association advised that it intended to make application lit the next annual meeting of the New Zealand Rowing Association to hold the Interprovincial Eight-oar Race for 11)37 allotted to Canterbury. The Otago Association was asked to support the application.—lt was decided to hold the letter over in the meantime.
