SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
' V 'PORT CHALMERS.— MAEdHIft. The collection of jetty dues at ; Port Chalmers has given rise to much public dissatisfaction. Hitherto no dues have been collected at Port Chalmers, and the I jetty accommodation has been so paltry and insufficient that the Government would scarcely have been warranted; in imposing any dues, however Hmally ti'J.t has therefore surprised the inhabitants that without any pretensions to improve this accommodation, dues should now be imposed' inflicting a tax upon the population of not less than four or five hundred pounds per annum, while there is only a gain of LSO to the provincial purse. But, what is more provoking, is the fact that, not content with charging for all goods passing over the ricketty structure called a jetty, a tax is extracted for the shipment of horses, drays, and other articles, for the landing or discharging of which there is not the slightest accommodation whatever, beyond what has been provided at considerable cost by private enterprise. ... THE ESCORT. The usual fortnightly Escort arrived in town yesterday afternoon, with the fol-
The block of land in Princes street which was cleared by the fire that commenced in the Exchange Hotel is now being rapidly covered with stone or stone and brick buildings—at least, such is the case with all the frontage to the street, except so much as is understood to be thb property of the Bank of New South Wales, and which has been acquired with a view to making it the site of a handsome bank building. This will possibly not be done for some time—indeed, previ-ously-existing leases have yet a few months to run—but the statement made will explain why a patch of the land is being left untouched, while on each side of it substantial premises are" being erected. A very strong 1 blue stone base t ment storey is being put in for the new Bank of Otago. No excavation has been necessary in this instance; but.in another case a roomy cellar has been excavated. We noticed yesterday that, in Princes street north, preparations were being made for covering the site of the old Provincial Buildings—the principal pile destroyed by the fire that commenced on the premises of Messrs Fellenberg and Forceau, in the Octagon. The " Molyneux Mail,” of Monday, apologises for the non-appearance’ of its usual loading article, on the ground of its removal into more extensive premises. The motion made by Alderman Gohen in the Melbourne City Council, .to the effect that the Corporation should “offer no opposition to the erection of. the_ proposed monument to Burke and Wills at the intersection of Collins and Bussell streets.” was carried on division by a majority of one vote only.'
