NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, March 6

The weather was fine for the opening day of the Invercargill Trotting Club's meeting. The track was in good racing order, but the attendance was not up tJ the usual standard. The totalisator and gate receipts showed a shrinkage. Master Garry began best in the Maiden Handicap, but was soon joined by Ma Waro, with Hnia Chimes and Sunnv Drive next. These were quickly clear, with Seaward de Oro the only one to get near them. Sunny Drive was done at the home turn and Ma Waro came on to beat Huia Chimes by a length and a-half. Seaward de Oro finished fast, half a length away, and then Master Garry. The winner was confidently handled and outclassed the field, although Seaward de Oro was very unlucky, and is a likely early improver. The Monowai Handicap was a very poor affair. Paul Bingen and Snndy Drusus went away correctly and were soon a long way out clear from Patty Todd and Fair Voyage, and these had the race to themselves. The two leaders had a good contest, but Paul Bingen was just too solid and beat Sandy Drusus narrowly. Patty Todd was eight lengths away, and then Fair Voyage. The others were never in it.

Monty Chimes led all the way to win the Thomson Handicap, followed by Stalwart, Harold Guy, Stirling Lady, College Boy and Blue Spark., The pace was slow

for the first mile and the field well bunched. It was a great race home, Monty Chimes hanging on long enough to beat Harold Guy by a head. Stalwart was a neck away and College Boy fourth. The last-named was unlucky in the straight and should soon improve. Stirling Lady is another likely early improver.

The Trotting Cup was a fine race. Full Hand, Happy Knight and Bide a Wee lost their chances at the start. Weary Voyage making play from Jolly Queen, Eighteen Carat and Ready Money. At the end of a-mile Blue Mountain Queen rushed up and joined Weary Voyage in the lead. Half a mile from home Ready Money and Weary Voyage dropped out, and into the straight Blue Mountain Queeu and Eighteen Carat were on terniß from Fairhaven and Jolly Queen. FairHaven skipped 100 yards from home and Blue Mountain Queen followed suit a few yards off the post, allowing the favourite to win by a neck from her. Fairhaven was half a length away, and then Happy Knight and Moko Child. Fairhaven and Blue Mountain Queen were both a trifle unlucky. Ma Waro was soon in front in the Crescent Handicap from Tritoma, Erin's Star and Chevalier, and they raced in this order for nearly a mile, where Embark and Guywin got handy. It was a fine race over the final stages, but Ma Waro was always holding his own and in a slogging finish beat Embark by half a length. Erin's Star was a length and a-half away, and then Tritoma and Pola Negri. Sandy Drusus &nd Paul Bingen made the pace early in the Travis Memorial Handicap. After going a furlong Parrish Chimes dropped his driver. Down the back Paul Bingen held command from" Sandy Drusus, with Nelson's Fortune putting in a run. Keeping it up, Nelson's •Fortune joined Paul Bingen three furlongs from home, with Patty Todd next. A keen race home saw Nelson's Fortune, in his first start at the trotting gait, beat Paul Bingen by half a length. Patty Todd was four lengths away, and then Anna's Voyage.

Antarctic Sun, M'Glusky and Walter Gay were the early leaders in the Takitimu Handicap from Night Voyage, and they soon opened up a gap. There was no change in the order until half a mile from home, where M'Glusky drew out and Moradine commenced a run. It was easy for M'Glusky, who won pulling up by four lengths from Moradine. Night Voyage was half a length away, and then Antarctic Sun and Walter Gay. The last-named should improve soon.

Bright Voyage and Desert Cloud set the pace in the Members' Handicap from Sir Gowan and Wrackette, and they raced in this order for five furlongs. Here Golden Mist got handy, and Bingen Wrack was alongside him. Across the top Golden Mist challenged the leaders, followed by Wrackette and Ready Money. A keen race home saw Ready Money get up on the outer to beat Golden Mist by a neck. Wrackette was a length away, and then Vologda. Golden Mist began slowly and was rather unlucky.
