WOMEN’S BOWLING

SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE A FOUR-DAY’S TOURNAMENT (Peb United Press Association) TIMARU, March 4. A four days’ bowling tournament conducted by the South Canterbury Women’s Bowling Centre was officially opened to-day in perfect weather. Two rounds were played yesterday, and today’s play saw the conclusion of the semi-finals of the Rinks. A total of 42 rinks is competing, entries having been received from Central Otago, Otago, South Canterbury, and North Canterbury. The play has been of a high standard, the semi-finals being particularly good. In the semi-finals Mrs Stewart (Dunedin) defeated Mrs Grant (Wairaate), and Mrs Thompson (Dunedin) defeated Mrs Joyut (Temuka), The Pairs games will be commenced to-morrow and for these there are 72 entries. THE COOKE BANNER SOUTHLAND BEATS OTAGO. (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 4. Fine weather, a good playing surface and a high standard of bowling contributed to the success of the annual match played on the Southland green this afternoon between the Otago and Southland women’s representative teams. Last season Southland journeyed to Dunedin and by a narrow margin captured the Cooke banner. To-day’s game was again a close one, Southland winning by 135 points to 128. That there was only a difference of seven points between the respective totals of the teams indicates the close nature of the seven-rink contest. By retaining the banner Southland has now won it three times against Otago’s six. Scores (Southland names first): — Mesdames Holloway, Patrick, Cooper and T.
