NEGLIGENT MOTORISTS

WARNING BY MAGISTRATE “MUST TAKE A STAND” (Pee United Press Association) BLENHEIM, March 4. “ The number of accidents arising from the negligent use of motor cars is becoming positively alarming and it is very necessary that the Bench should take a stand in the matter,” said Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court when imposing a sentence on a commercial traveller who had pleaded guilty to a second offence of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. “The most vicious of all these cases is that of being drunk in charge,” Mr Maunsell continued. “ Commercial travellers who use care in connection with their business must be teetotallers or drink within strict limits or else must face the consequences. It may be a hardship in this case to cancel the licence, but I simply must give first consideration to the safety of the public. I make a definite announcement that no matter what a man’s occupation is, if he is found drunk in charge of a motor car he must face the consequences.” The magistrate adjourned the case for a fortnight, stating that he would then cancel the accused’s licence and disqualify him from obtaining one for a considerable time.
