GUILTY OF ARSON

MARRIED WOMAN CONVICTED SENTENCE DEFERRED (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, March 4. After a retirement of 25 minutes, the jury in the Supreme Court to-day found Florence Alberta Birss, married, of Ohakune, aged 29, guilty of arson. The jury added a rider strongly recommending the prisoner to mercy. She was remanded for sentence till to-morrow, Mr Justice Ostler intimating that he would take time to consider the rider together with the probation officer’s report. The trial, which was adjourned from the sittings a fortnight ago, lasted two days, the Crown calling some 20 witnesses.
