THE CHILDREN’S FRIEND

LORD NUFFIELD’S CRUISE A DAY AT A PICNIC (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, March 4. Affection for children, which is one of the most prominent characteristics of Lord Nuffield, the British motor manufacturer and philanthropist, was shown in ample measure at Mansion House Bay, Kawau Island. Lord Nuffield was visiting Kawau in the course of his cruise on board the yacht Moerewa with the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Ernest Davis, and for the best part of the day he acted as host and unofficial “ undo ” ..o a party of Waiheke schoolchildren who were visiting the island for a picnic. Lord Nuffield noticed the children when they landed at Mansion House Bay, and before long he joined them, armed with a huge tin of sweets. These he proceeded to scatter round by the handful while the children ' scrambled for them in high delight. At first the school children did not know the identity of their benefactor, but before long they were assembled by the adults in charge of them and formally introduced. Some Maori children in the party almost spontaneously came forward and performed a Native action song in his honour Many of the children hardly stirred from Lord Nuffield’s aide during their visit. They were regaled with ice cream and fruit drinks in addition to sweets, and Lord Nuffield himself seemed to find endless delight in their company. Mr Davis had planned to cruise to Great Barrier Island, but Lord Nuffield expressed himself ns being charmed with the surroundings -at Kawau, and the yacht remained at anchor there. The party will probably return to Auckland to-morrow.
