AMATEUR CYCLING

4 SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING

An interesting programme of lour cycling events was witnessed at the Caledonian Ground last evening, when the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club conducted the first of a Series of evening meetings. The weather was fine, but a fresh breeze from the north-east made conditions a little unpleasant for competitors and spectators alike. The Quarter-mile A Grade Handicap, the first of three races for the Walker and Hall Cup, attracted a field of six starters. Sinclair, off 10 yards, wentaway well and had caught the leaders going down the back straight. In a good finish Sinclair went on to win by half a wheel from J. Henry. The first of a series of three races for the Paul Cup., the B Grade Halfmile Handicap, provided an exciting finish. Chalmers’ took the lead going down the back straight for the second time, closely followed by Black. In the final 60 yards Black came away to win by a length from Chalmers. The Half-mile Handicap was won by Fullerton, who went to the lead after a slow first lap and was not headed despite a strong sprint by Hegarty. The Two-mile Handicap, in which there were II starters, resulted in the closest finish of the evening, in which Homer gained the decision by a tyre over Fletcher. The field was fairly bunched over the greater oart of the journey, but in the final lap Fletcher went away to lead comfortably. Homer put on the pace and in a great sprint up the straight just managed to cross the line first. The following are the results: — HALF-MILE HANDICAP. First Heat. —W. Black (70yds) 1, R.
