THE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —As a spectator at the New Zealand national swimming championships last Saturday evening allow me to offer my congratulations to the competitors for the promptitude with which they faced the starter. As regards the multitude of officials, they proved not only a hindrance to the competitors, but to the spectators, who were at times presented with an almost impenetrable barrier through which they were asked to view the competitors. The crowning success from the official point of view presented itself in the form of a prominent official dashing along the edge of the pool clad in a lounge suit minus coat and vest,
surely a most undignified procedure at a national championship. Would it be too much to suggest that white flannels would be a more appropriate attire for such an occasion.—l am, etc., Spectator.
