MOTOR CAR SMASH
CRASHES DOWN STEEP HILL ) YOUNG MAN KILLED TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED (Peb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 18. One young man was killed and two others seriously injured yesterday afternoon when the motor car in which they were travelling along the steep winding main highway between Waiwera and Warkworth left the road about a mile and a-half from the former village and crashed down about 150 yards before coming to rest on a ledge in a steep paddock. The fourth occupant of the car was able to regain the road and reach Warkworth by -ervice car.
The owner and driver of the car had it given to him as a present on the occasion of his .twenty-second birthday, which was yesterday. The casualties were: —
ARTHUR TREVOR DAY, aged 22, of Matakana, killed. John Rawlings, driver of the car, aged 22, of Devonpott, fracture of the left thigh. Richard Cogan, aged 16, of Devonport, concussion and internal injuries. Ross Jones, aged 18, of Devonport, abrasions.
The accident happened when the car while on a narrow portion of the road met another car, the front hub of which it caught, causing it to rip off the running board. It then swerved out of control over the bank and down a steep paddock. The deceased suffered a broken neck and severe skull injuries, and Dr Osborne, of Warkworth, who was on the scene soon after the accident, stated that death was probably instantaneous. The two seriously injured occupants were conveyed to the Auckland Hospital by ambulance from Devonport station.
