WOMAN MEAT PACKER
ENTERPRISING AMERICAN An American business woman who arrived in Sydney by the Nankin last week was Mrs M. J. Jones, of Portland, Oregon. Since her husband’s death she has carried on his business of the firm of M. J. Jones, meat packers and distributors, throughout the State of Oiegdft, and she has fhe distinction of being one of three women packers in the United States. Mrs Jones for 12 years acted as secretary to her husband, and so was thoroughly familiar with the business when she took it over. One of the innovations in the business, she told a newspaper representative, was the packing of produce in cellophane wrappings, and the preparing of meat loaves, which were a popular small goods line in America and were made from minced chicken, pork, ham and other meats.
Business in prepared meats had extended considerably in recent years, Mrs Jones said, and this she attributed to the depression, which necessitated people living in smaller quarters, and finding it more economical to buy small quantities of prepared foods than joints, which they had to prepare themselves.
