Eight rinks journeyed from Waimate on Saturday to play Phoenix on -Phoenix green, the local bowlers being successful in the match by 232 points to 164. CRICKET A biatch was played between the Oamaru senior and junior teams on Saturday in delightful weather at the School Grounds, and resulted in a win for the seniors by about 40 runs on the first innings. The B team, which had only nine men, batted first, and compiled the fairly good total of 145. The opening pair, Watson and Hunter, gave their‘side a good start, contributing 22 and 16 respectively. Campbell was run out at 8, and J. Bee was, dismissed in a similar manner after knocking up 17 runs. W. Bee, Daniell, and J. Brooker all batted well, the latter topping the scoring with a good 25. Heudra and Cahill were the successful bowlers for the seniors. Cahill and Hunt opened for Oamaru, and the former went to a ball from Watson when there were 18 runs on the board. Hunt batted well to reach 23, and Kelk and Keith also reached double figures. A feature of the innings was the performance of Meikle, who was unbeaten at 81, after an attractive display. LAWN TENNIS SOUTHERN SUB-ASSOCIATION The Southern Sub-association’s competition was continued a further stage on Saturday in ideal weather conditions. Hampden-Waianlcarua maintained its unbeaten recond by defeating Maheno by 17 sets to 7. and Kakanui avenged its defeat at the hands of Enfield in the first match between these two teams by defeating the latter by 15 sets to 9. Having won all its games, the HampdenWaianakarua team is practically in an unassailable, position, and certainly should run out the winners for this season. GENERAL NEWS The attention of farmers is drawn to the alteration of the date of the Waiareka sale, which will now be held tomorrow (Tuesday) as usual. The present entries comprise rape lambs, wethers, horse and gig, and harness. Some commotion was caused amongst the residents of the north end on Saturday afternoon through the sounding of a siren, many going out expecting to see the fire engine. It appears, however, that the Dunedin aud Waitaki County traffic inspectors (Messrs M’Dowell and Laugh ton) endeavoured to stop a car, the driver of which paid no heed to their signals, causing them to give chase and sound the siren. Eventually the car was brought to a stop at Wise’s store, and was taken in possession by the Dunedin traffic inspector, and brought to the Police Station, being later taken away oy the owner. PORT OF OAMARU High Water—January 27: 5.34 a.m. and 5.56 p.m. The Wamui is due at Oamaru on Wednesday, February 5, to load for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via Timaru and Lyttelton. , , _ The Karu is announced to load at Oamaru to-morrow for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth, via Timaru and Lyttelton. „ ~ . The Karetu will load at Newcastle and Sydney, and complete at Hobart about February 10 for direct discharge at Oamaru, being due here on February 28. This will enable Oamaru merchants to bring cargo at direct rates, without transhipment chargee. , , , T , . The Wingatui cleared Auckland on hriday. January 17, and brings cargo for Oamaru, being due at this port to-mor-row. The vessel will load for Wellington and Auckland, via Timaru and Lyttelton. PERSONAL Nurse M. M'Lees, who has resigned from the staff of the Oamaru Public Hospital, has left Oamaru to take up the position of staff nurse at the Riverton Hospital. Mr H.
