WAIMATE Cricket Matches L In the only match played in the Waimate Cricket Association’s competition on Saturday C.F.C.A. defeated Waimate A by one run on the first innings. Waimate A was dismissed for 48 in the first innings, F. Wilce (22) being the only batsman to reach double figures. When C.F.C.A.’s last man took the field two were required for a first-innings win. Waimate A closed the second innings at 79 for five, and. C.F.C.A. had lost eight wickets for 46 runs when stumps were drawn. E. Hicks (C.F.C.A.) captured seven Waimate wickets for 19 runs in the first innings. R. Fleming took two Waimate wickets for three runs. For Waimate, F. Morrison took five wickets for six runs and F. Wilce five for 25.

Automobile Association Meeting At a special meeting of the Waimate Automobile Association a rule enabling the association to take shares or securities in any company having objects in part similar to those of the association or having as one of its objects the publication of journals of interest to members was added to the rules of the association. Mr C. Dickson was elected to the committee in place of Mr J. Smillie (resigned). The committee of the association met following the general meeting. It was decided to notify the Waimate County Council of dangerous corners at Mr Columb’s property on the Half-chain road, Mr Cutler’s property, Waituna, andKuottingly Park.

Lawn Tennis Tournament The semi-final matches in the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-association’s B Grade Men’s Singles Competition resulted;—J. Shea beat G. Richmond 6 —5, 6 —4, W. Westphal beat C. Ryan 6—2, 3 —6, 6 —2.

Special Church Services Special memorial services were held at nearly all Waimate churches yesterday. The Waimate 11.5. A. held a parade to St. Augustine’s Anglican Church for the evening service, when the Rev. A. H. Acheson delivered the sermon. PALMERSTON Cricket The local cricket team travelled to Waikouaiti on Saturday, the match resulting in a draw. The visitors made 90 for seven wickets, and Waikouaiti 161 for seven. For Waikouaiti, L. Snook made 45 runs, C. Mayston 57 and W. Carling 17, while for the visitors J. Lang made 12. J. Fletcher, the opening batsman, was unbeaten when time was called with 43 runs to his credit. Bowling for Waikouaiti, L. Snook took two wickets for 9 runs, Hayden two for 4, and L. Bell three for 45. Dalgleish, Chave, Fletcher and Osborne shared honours for Palmerston. Dunback defeated Macraes at Dunback by 95 runs to 46. Mlvor and Hercus, with 22 and 38 respectively, materially aided Dunback to victory, but no doublefigure scores were made by the visitors. M’Gregor took the wickets for Macraes, while M'lvor and Fraser bowled well for Dunback.

BALCLUTHA Welfare Society The annual meeting of the Kaka Point Welfare Society was held on Saturday night in the society’s building at Kaka Point. Mr John Clark occupied the chair. The annual balance sheet showed that the society was in a good position financially, with a small credit balance and freedom from debt on the year’s working. Principal assets were the hall and carnival ground which still carried substantial mortgages. The election of officebearers resulted:—President, Mr B. Stiven (Paretai); secretary, Mr J. M. Doggart; treasurer, Mr J. T. Walter. After discussion it was decided to endeavor to sell the carnival ground, with roll-down buildings, etc. A small committee was appointed to meet the Port Molyneux Domain Board with a view to getting that portion of Kororo Creek bounding the sports ground cleaned our and made suitable for bathing. It was also resolved to make an effort to acquire ground suitable for a bowling green for summer visitors. At the conclusion of the formal business an enjoyable smoke concert was held.

Glenomaru Fatality The inquiry into the death John \ incent .Spence .(aged 49 years), who was killed while logging in the bush at Glenomaru on Tuesday, was held at Romahapa before Mr M. T. Jackman, J.P., acting coroner, and a jury of four. After hearing lengthy evidence the jury returned a verdict that the deceased met his death through being struck by a wire rope and pulley block while engaged in log hauling operations. The evidence went to show

that the usual precautions had been observed by Cunningham Bros., proprietors of the sawmill. Stock Prices There was a fairly large yarding of sheep at the fortnightly sale at Balclutha. On the whole it proved a good market for sheep, but cattle were distinctly lower in values. Fat sheep also show'ed a decline, especially heavy-weight wethers, which apparently were not wanted by butchers at this season of the year. These made from 20s to 245, butchers’ ewes, 16s to I8a; freezing ew'es, 10s 6d to 12a 6d; fat lambs, of which 1089 were yarded, sold at from 17s 6d to 25s 3d. Store sheep (25,02 yarded) sold at up to late rates. Rape lambs made 14s to 10s sd; ewe lambs, 17s; small lambs, 9s to 11s; fourfooth ewes, to 25s 3d; six-tooth, from 7s to 10s; faihng-mouthe'd ewes, 7s to 10s; forward wethers, 16s to 22s Bd. Fat bullocks brought up to £6 15s; fat heifers, £3 10s; fat cows, from £2 to £3 10s; store steers, £2 10s. Young pigs were again in good demand, suckers realising 12s 6d to 18s 6d, and slips to 225. The Balclutha branch of the Labour Party at a meeting decided to communicate with the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) and request that before deciding on the construction of a bridge over the Molyneux at Clydeyale, a full investigation of the practicability of construcing a road on the south bank of the river from Balclutha to Clydevale should be made. Such a road, it was contended, would provide employment for a large number of men, and afford more direct access to main road and railway.

Drought Conditions The continuance of drought conditions in South Otago, where there has been no rain over the greater part for more than a month, is expected to have a ruinous effect on the turnip crops on the ridges, and many farmers hold the view that if rain does not come in a fortnight, the crops will be completely spoiled. In isolated districts there is scarcity of water for household purposes. LAWRENCE Tuapeka Collie Club The annual meeting of the Tuapeka Collie Club was held in the Times The secretary submitted the statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the last trials, showing receipts £36 19s and expenditure £43 2s Id. The report was adopted. Proclamation There was a good attendance of the public at the Town Hall at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, when the Deputy Mayor (Mr G. R. Talbqys) read the proclamation in connection with the accession of King Edward VIII. At the conclusion of the reading a verse of the National Anthem was sung. Mining British Developments, Ltd., has commenced redrilling operations on Mitchell’s Flat, Waipori district, with _ a view to establishing the values in this district.
