NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to Daily Times)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 25. The summer meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club was held at Addington in bright sunshine. The track was in great order, and there was a good local attendance to witness some excellent sport. ■* Kotinga. Amonos, and Kings Guard broke early in the Spreydon Handicap. Lady Sonoma was soon in charge, with Header, Germanicus, and Resound handy. Germanicus took charge, after six furlongs, Lady Sonoma breaking a little further on. Germanicus was well clear or Headei, Lady Sonoma, Resound. Kuini, and Flotsam half a mile from home. Kuini put in a good run in the straight, but Germanicus hung on to win by a neck Resound was four lengths away, then Flotsahi, with the others strung out. Germanicus had not won a race for more than, two ,years. He always had speed, but he was unreliable. 1 In the Durham Handicap, one mile, in saddle, Arachne, Homeward, and John Jinks broke at the start. John Jinks got going quickly and was in front before going two furlongs, Somerby and Golden Direct being next. The back-markers moved up fast along the hack, ancUtwo furlongs from home John Jinks had Kingcraft as his nearest attendant, Taxpayer and Sunny Morn being next. Kingcratt headed John Jinks when the straight was reached. Then Taxpayer put in his claim, and in a good finish he won by a meek, while Sunny Morn got up to beat Kingcraft by a head. John Jinks -was four lengths away. Taxpayer came home very solidly, and may be on the way to even better form. . , , Kingcraft and Blue Mountain broke at the start of the • Midsummer Handicap, while Craganour also went oJr slowly, but soon recovered. After half a inile *€fiuvius joined Avernus in the lead, with Llewellyn’s Pride, Craganour, and Gold Tinge handy. Vesuvius then took charge, while along the back Wrecker, Key Spec, and Worthy Light moved up. There was not much change half a mile from home, but a little further on Wrecker broke, interfering with Rey Spec. After leading to the straight, Vesuvius retired. Craganour was then left showing the way to Llewellyn’s Pride, with Gold Tinge and Rey Spec not fur away. Craganour tired, and Llewellyn’s Pride won by halt a length from Gold Tinge, who hung on to beat Rey Spec by a head. Craganour and Worthy Light were close up. The winner, a half-brother to Silver d uro, has been racing very consistently, and he is on the way to the best class. John Jinks and Fernbrook Lass, broke at the start of the Linwood Handicap. Sylvia Sydney soon took charge from Waress and Grace M'Elwyn, while after half a mile Homeward, Mocast, and Colonial Boy was handy. John Jinks was at the tail of the field when he fed half a mile from home. A furlong further on Sylvia Sydney went on from Grace M Elwyn, Queen Author, Recess, and Uunfiie. Once in the straight Grace M'Elwyn challenged and beat her stable mate, Sylvia Sydney, by a neck. Gunfire finished strongly a head away, while two lengths back Recess, Bingeu Palm, and Queen Author were in line. Recess came home with a damaged sulky. The Liverpool Handicap was spoiled through Isabel Derby, the favourite, breaking early, - being pulled up after a mile, while Grand Mogul and Aristotle also settled their chances when they tangled at the start. All Sunshine led out, and after half a mile she had De Soto, Golden Cross, Gunmetal, Real Burton and Editor following in that order. There was no change till a furlong from the post, where De Soto went on to beat All Sunshine easily. Two lengths back, Real Burton got up to beat Gunmetal in the last stride for third place. De Soto is a solid customer, not yet at the end of his improvement. The Southland-bred mare. All Sunshine, went well all the way. but the winner, is very good. Isabel Derby was pulled up at the half mile, a bandage having come loose. M. J. M'Tigue. the driver of Rea] Burton, was cautioned .for undue use of his whip. The Cashmere Handicap, a two-mile race for trotters, attracted a small field of six, including a bracket. New Metford led out from Teviot Downs, while Bessie Parrish was soon in third place, with Great Wav handy, Raima and First Wrack being four lengths away at the end of half a mile. Great Way dropped out a round from home, where First Wrack had joined Bessie Parrish in third place. New Metfonl was beaten when the straight was reached, and after a aood finish over the last two furlongs, Bessie Parrish beat Teviot Downs by a neck. New Metford was five lengths away. First Wrack being several lengths further hack, tiring at the end. The winner has been racing consistently for some time, while Teviot Downs has become much more solid. Guy Junior, the favourite, broke at the start of the Papnhui Handicap and though he was well placed at the end of a mile, the effort 'to make up his leeway settled his chances. Sylvia Sydney led out from Prairie King and Lilian Bond, while after half a mile Waress, Queen Author, and Peter Locanda were handy. Agile and Guy Junior then moved up and starting the last lap they were both in the front bunch. Along the back there was not much change. Sylvia Sydney led Agile to the straight, where Agile faded out and Sylvia Sydney hung on to beat Queen Author by a neck. Peter Locanda was over a length away, half a length in frent of Willow Wave, who finished fast. The winner’s performance, in leading all the 1 way, wag a good one, especially as she

had. had a hard mile and a-quarter race earlier in the day. There were some brilliant pacers iu the Craven Handicap. The well-backed Rey Spec broke at the'' start, while Graham Direct, a hot favourite, tangled badly after a furlong. Avernus led out, but after two furlongs Worthy Light joined him, while a little further on Cloudy Range, Sure, Reporter, and Sunny Morn were handy. Worthy Light took charge three furlongs from home, but Cloudy Range headed him at the entrance to the straight. Worthy Light then retired and Cloudy Range stayed on to beat Sure by a neck. Avernus was a good length away, a neck in front of Sunny Morn, with Reporter and Bingen Palm close up. Cloudy Range won handsomely in his first race for Mr G. J. Barton, who purchased him only recently and now looks to have a bargain. Indianapolis, starting from 108 yards behind, paced a fine race, though without even having a chance. After going off steadily he was timed from the post to do the first mile in 2min 4 l-ssec and the mile and a-quarter in 2min 36 l-ssec.
