NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, January 25.

The Wellington Cup meeting was concluded in tine weather and the final card attracted a large attendance. The going was a bit faster than in the earlier part of the meeting. The racing was full of interest and produced a surprise when Heritage ran past Kinnoull after turning for home in the Trentham Stakes. Kinnoull made a disappointing response when challenged by Heritage, but the former is a better colt than the form suggests. Heritage beat Kinnoull for speed, but it may require another' trial to settle the merits of the two colts.

A really good performance was established by Red Sun in winning the Wallaceville High-weight. Burdened with his big weight, his rider adopted the usual tactics of trailing the field, and when the field swung into the home stretch he was still last. Then his rider pulled him out and, though he still looked too far back inside the distance, he, however, managed to unwind a paralysing finishing run which not only got him to the leaders but carried him past to win by nearly a length. Taumau, who had joined up with Royal King, responsible for the earlf pace, was hard put to withstand Royal Papa, who improved, only having a neck to spare. Grand Blow was fourth and next followed Petrarch, who. after looking likely, failed in the last furlong. In a true-run race Heritage not only defeated Kinnoull in the 10-furloug Trentham Stakes, the time, 2min 4sec, being a course record, but over the final furlong he completely ran away from the southern three-year-old. It was a perfect start, and Kinnoull set out to make the pace, and there was no loafing. Out of the straight and into the back stretch he was showing the way from Lowenberg, Heritage and Superex, who were almost in line. There was no alteration passing the mile post, but at the seven Superex tore past and endeavoured to join up with Kinnoull. This he could not do, never being any cjsoer than the leader’s girths, and at the half-mile Ellis slipped Kinnoull out into a two-length lead. Atkins on Heritage was ready, however, and he made a particularly quick run round to be on terms with Kinnoull as they hit the course proper. Coming to the false rail the pair, having left Lowenberg and Superex astern, were racing stride for stride and many were calling for the favourite. However, to close watchers it was apparent that Heritage was doing the, better, and at the furlong post, when Atkins gave him “ the works,” he shot to a lead which, despite the hard work of Elbs, increased with each succeeding stride. At the post Heritage had four lengths advantage, with Lowenberg five lengths further away, while it would have been possible to walk across the course before Superex arrived. It was a great race for nine furlongs. The final 220 yards was a procession. A blanket finish in the Hopeful Stakes found the judge unable to separate Gay Chief and Deficit, with Karl a head away third. Early. Laughing Lass, Martinborough, Jovial Prince, Karl, Guy Chief, and Impersonator were showing the way to the cour Se proper. Laughing Las’s shook oft Martinborough, but Karl stuck to her, and the big weight told on the filly, and in the final furlong she retired. Karl was then immediately joined by Deficit on the outer, and Gay Chief. ’ The three were almost in line as they hit the judge, and he declared as stated above. Laughing Lass was fourth, and then came Impersonator and Jovial Prince. Chief Ranger won .the Melrose Handicap and wa s responsible for a very meritorious effort. He was hurried to the front, where he had Sansfoy chopping at him for the first half-mile. When the latter retired Colombo put in his claim, and Chief Ranger beat him off. Then, at the distance. Vinco threw out his challenge, and this tune Chief Ranger not only dealt with it effectively but at the finish was winning like a real horse, though he only had a length in his favour. Colombo was three lengths further back, with Revival, Blue Gaiter, and Barley Almond next to finish.

The judge was set with another problem with the finish of the Summer Handicap, when five runners arrived on top of him in a thrilling finish. Rosa Bay, who had streaked out into the lead at the halfmile post, after allowing Great Star to do the early work in front, was faced with several challenges in the home sretch. Spiral was pursuing her all the way down the running, but the mare kept doing just as well as the Currie horse, while ranged round the pair and almost on terms were Passion Fruit, Grand Jury, and Sunee, The five hit the line with Rona Bay’s nose just poking out from Spiral, while a short head away wa s Passion Fruit. A few inches further back was Grand Jury and Sunee, almost head for head, while Senior, whose ridei lost his irons after going two furlongs, was right up. A sterling performance was registered by Silver Streak in winning the mile Thorndon Handicap, with a steadier of 9.11. The pace was clapped on from the barrier rise, with Knock Out, Metal Bird, Full Trottle, Princess Doreen. Sweet Agnes, and Pladie making up the front bunch. Metal Bird had assumed charge on the turn, while Silver Streak had improved his position materially, while fcllowing this pair were Knock Out, Full Throttle, Pladie, and Princess Doreen. The leading pair sorted themselves out from the false rail and battled every inch of the last two furlongs and a-half, the top-weight staying on just too well, and he won by a neck. Metal Bird only had a head the better of Tunneller, who came from a long way back, while a neck further away was Fracas, who was third to last into the straight. Next to finish were After Money and Cheap Money, the last pair to turn for home, and Full Throttle and Knock Out.

Ridden with great • confidence, Invoice won the City Handicap from Queen of Song, whose rider was not as active as he might have been when -it came time to get into serious action. Symcony, The Ark, Diatomous, and Invoice were prominent running down the lane and coming to the course proper, with Knockhn tailed off with Bon Tray. Symcony and The Ark retired at the false rail, and a little further Diatomous gave a repeat order. This left Invoice in front, and then Queen of Song appeared. She looked a grave danger, but her rider failed to get going soon and hard enough, and Invoice led her home by a neck. Iviiockiin, with a great burst, came into third place two lengths further back, and then came Diatomous, The Ark, and Copyist The meeting was concluded with Debham showing improvement and winning well from Pukeko and Silver Jest. The others made a. poor show.
