TWO CENTURIES

DARLING AND CHIPPERFIELD AUSTRALIANS IN AFRICA (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, December 9. The weather was dull, sultry and overcast for continuation of play in the match Australia v. Transvaal. The wicket bore little signs of wear. Against accurate bowling Brown and Fingleton scored steadily until Brown was beaten by a slow ball. O'Brien hit with terrific power, but became too venturesome and was smartly stumped. Fingleton and Darling then made a determined third-wicket stand, Fingleton was solid, painstaking, and always effective. He survived chances, at 14 and 28, but when within one run of a century he was bowled by a beautiful ball. Darling was in great form and played dashing cricket, reaching his century after 153 minutes. He hit 14 fours.

Richardson failed, but Chipperfield came in to play sound and entertaining cricket. He and Oldfield added 50 in 23 minutes. A thrilling race for his century by Chipperfield marked the closing stages. He was 91 when the last man, M'Cormick, came in. Chipperfield reached 100 in 123 minutes. He hit 15 boundaries.

The best bowlers were Mitchell, Langton and Nupen. Following are the scores: — TRANSVAAL. First innings 201 AUSTRALIA.

M.C.C. TEAM'S EASY WIN SYDNEY, December 10. (Received Dec. 10, at 9 p.m.) Marylebone had a comfortable win over the Australian eleven when the match was concluded to-day. The visitors won by 203 runs. The Australians again gave a weak batting display on a good wicket. The bowling of the Englishmen was always steady but never hostile. Sims kept a beautiful length and had all the batsmen subdued. Parks also bowled well. The batting, apart from that by Robinson and Easton, was featureless. The fielding of the Englishmen was very keen. Human took a remarkable catch to dismiss M'Gilvray. Running in the outfield he tripped but held the ball inches from the ground while stretched at full length on the grass. The M.C.C. team hopes to sail by the Wanganella on Thursday. It will not play any further matches in Australia. Following are the scores: — MARYLEBONE.

GIFTS TO THE TEAM SYDNEY, December 10. (Received Dec. 11,' at 0.15 a.m.) In the event of the team not sailing on the Waiiganella because of the strike, every effort will be made to embark on the "Monterey on December 14. The Monterey's accommodation is already severely taxed. The president of the New South Wales Cricket Association, Mr Sydney Smith, presented each, member of the M.C.C. team with a miniature boomerang embossed with the association's badge, and Hardstaff with an inscribed ball in recognition of his feat in scoring 230 not out. Mr Smith described the players as a splendid lot of fellows, and added: "We will be well pleased if Marylebone sends us a team of similar type next season." E. R. T. Holmes, in acknowledging the gifts, said there was not a member of the team but would consider himself lucky to be invited to Australia again next year.
