THE HAUPTMANN CASE

NO REVIEW OF CONVICTION NEW YORK, December 9. The United States Supreme Court at Washington handed down its decision refusing to review the conviction of Hauptmann for kidnapping and murdering the Lindbergh baby. The court denied the contention that his constitutional rights had been violated by the manner in which the trial had been conducted. Hauptmann can still appeal to the New Jersey Board of Pardons for clemency, or seek a new trial if adequate new evidence is discovered on which to base a petition. Detective Parker, meantime, to-day severely criticised the method of the prosecution of Hauptmann and declared he would stake his life's reputation that the German carpenter was not guilty of kidnapping and murder. " The case was two and a-half years old in the summer of 1934, and they had to have someone to hang it on and Hauptmann was a good victim," he said.
