Conditions were perfect for the conclusion of the Takapuna Jockey Clubs spring meeting at Ellerslie to-day, and some smart performances were registered. Flood Tide was responsible for a surprise in winning the Pupuke Plate and paying over a quarter of a century. Vera Acre was another to return double figures when she scored in the opening event. After a number of unsuccessful efforts, Vera Acre opened her winning account in the Vauxhall Handicap. She was not prominent till the closing stages, when she finished on to beat Fei Mali by halt a length. Red Flame and Gemland were the leaders to the home turn from Madelon, Gay Rebel, Karohia, and Fei Mali, Gay Rebel sticking on to take third place a head away. High Quality was fourth, followed by Karohia (who missed the jump out) and King Theo. A goou run on the rails assisted Vera Acre, whereas Karohia was a shade unlucky. The each-way favourite Day Wind attempted to win the Stanley Handicap all the way, but he was defeated in the last few strides by Keith Lu, who came right from the rear. It looked as if Day Wind would win at the distance, but his rider was a trifle, confident. The others were well beaten, although Huskie battled 1 on for third, and Valmint was fourth. Day Wind is on the improve, and should do well over a middle distance. The favourite, Travelling Agent, ran below his best form in the Kawau Hurdles, and was never dangerous, although he was fourth at the finish after being a long way back. The race was run at a fast pace, and resolved itself into a contest between King’s Archer and Indolent, the former staying the better to win nicely. Emancipation was a moderate third, but he is likely to be much better for 1 the race. None of the others displayed any real dash. The each-way favourite Namakia scored a very convincing victory in the St. Andrew’s Handicap. She and Enge made all the running, Namakia coming away at the end to win by three lengths from Adalene, who ran on fairly well. Jonathan, after being in the rear with Wait and See for most of the way, finished strongly for third, and Wait and See was fourth. Namakia’s performance was good, and so was that of Jonathan. Both are trained by A. Cook. ;Kiltowyn was steadied by his weight, while Enge and Imamijit failed to run on. Beginning better than he has done previously. Gay Chief won the Rakino Handicap from end ter end from Rulette, who was always his closest attendant. Gay Talkie was a fair third, and Marjory Daw ivas fourth after showing early speed. Gay Chief has been a hard-worked two-year-old, but he has stood up to his racing remarkably well. There was a great finish in the Pupuke Plate, Flood Tide finishing strongly on the rails to win by half a head "from Tray Bit, with Kahapa a similar distance away third and’Mazir right up fourth. Jewelled Girdle and Kahapa made the running, and they were in front at the turn from Tray Bit, Loombiuation, Royal Dance, and Mazir. Kahapa bored out on Tray Bit in the run home, otherwise the latter would probably have won. Flood Tide, who carried 71b overweight, was last at the turn, and his finishing run confirmed the impression that he is likely to make a solid stayer. Mazir did not do quite as well as expected, but he was by no means disgraced.

Another good finish was provided in the Ngataringa Handicap. Boughal and Scotland toade all the pace, and although the latter looked like winning inside the distance “Boughal did best near the end to win narrowly. Royal Secret ran a fine race for third, and she may do a little better shortly. Sinking Fund performed in his usual solid fashion for fourth, and was followed by Corohis and Solaria. The last-named was troublesome at the post, and did not jump out too cleanly. As a result he was forced to go on the outside, and, although he appeared likely below the distance, he weakened near the end. Impasto failed to run to form. Solaria and Royal Secret are likely improvers. Teak repeated his first day’s success by scoring again in the Cautley Handicap. Mungacre was responsible for the pacemaking. and led into the straight from Teak, Bantry, and Prince Yen. Teak finished very gamely, and just won from Bantry after the latter had held a slight advantage near the distance. Prince Yen was a close third, and Persian Lady was fourth. Prince Yen was a shade unlucky, being disappointed when going for an opening in the straight.
