SHIPPING TIE-UP
THE OUTLOOK NO BRIGHTER STRATHNAVER DEPARTS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 1. (Received Dec. 1, at 8 p.m.) There is no improvement in the outlook in the shipping tie-up. The Strathnaver left last night with interstate passengers, a special permit having been granted by the Navigation Department. It is stated that individual action on the part of the men is responsible for the hoid-up. The cooks are to be supporting the seamen, but it is unlikely that other maritime unions will fall into line. EARLIER MESSAGES INTERSTATE PASSENGERS SYDNEY, November 30. The Commonwealth Navigation Department will probably grant permission to the Strathnaver to carry interstate passengers. This will involve a special dispensation under the Navigation Act, which does not allow oversea liners to compete with interstate passenger vessels. The Strathnaver sails for London this evening. i The Union Company’s freighter Talune, which arrived from Newcastle yesterday, and which was to have sailed for Hobart at midnight, is tied up, as the members of the crew stated that they would not offer for re-engagement until they had consulted the pnion. The Newcastle branch of the Seamen’s Union decided not to w r ork under the new Federal award. The Herald says: “It is now regarded as certain that the men will strike on every vessel arriving in Sydney .over the week-end.” THE WANGANELLA SYDNEY, November 30. A crew was not obtained for the Wanganella. The Huddart-Parker Company says there is little likelihood of the vessel sailing to-day. SPECIAL STOPWORK MEETING SYDNEY, December 1. (Received Deo, 2, at 1 a.m.) Week-end developments seem to indicate that the seamen intend to paralyse interstate sea transport until a special stopwork meeting on Tuesday determines whether they will work under the terms and conditions of the new award. No fewer than 644 men are already involved. The Huddart, Parker Company has been advised that the crew of the Zealandia, which is due to-morrow from Hobart, have given 24 hours’ notice of their intention to leave the ship on its arrival in Sydney. The Wanganella’s sailing has been postponed.
