CUSTOMS RETURNS

PORT OF DUNEDIN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF IMPORTS The Customs returns for the port of Dunedin for the month of October reveal that, despite a slight decrease on the amount collected during the same period last vear, the month was a very good one, being the best since November of last year. This was due to the amount of shipping, boats from London, Liverpool, and New York being in port at different times. The figures for the seven months of the financial year also show a decrease. During October Customs duty totalled £50.109 19s lid, compared with £60,813 18s 2d in October, 1934. The figures for the portion of the financial year now completed were £375,131 9s 8d for 1935 and £386.208 Is 9d for 1934. The beer duty figures for the month show an increase of £291 4s 4d, the total for the past month being £19,883 17s 3d. The seven months period, however, shows a decrease from £131.700 17s 9d in 1934 to £120,451 12s 9d this year. The amount of sales tax collected was £22,024 14s sd, representing an increase of £862 15s 6d on the figure for October of last year. The tax yielded £142,062 4s 10c! for the seven months, compared with £139,397 13s lOd last year. There was a distinct drop in the revenue derived from the petrol tax over both periods. The monthly total was £11,981 16s, or £2457 lis 6d below the total for the same period last year. So far, £79,168 5s 8d has been taken for the financial year, compared with £93,490 2s lid last year. There has also been a sharp decrease in the amount of tyre tax collected, £4lO 18s 4d being the total for last month, against £844 10s 2d in October, 1934. The drop is less perceptible over the longer period, the figures being £4887 8s Id for 1935 and £5130 2s 5d for 1934. The gold export duty has continued to show an improvement, and the increase for October over the total in the same month last vear is £393 9s 4d. An increase of £2893 14s 9d is revealed by a comparison of the figures for the longer period. MONTH OF OCTOBER. WELLINGTON RETURNS EXPANSION OF TRADE. (Peu United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 31. The Customs revenue collected in Wellington continues very buoyant, reflecting the steady increase in imports and the general expansion of trade in the Dominion. The net Customs revenue this month totalled £260,389, compared with £241,527 in October, 1934, an increase of £18,862 For the 10 expired months of 1935 the net revenue totals £2,211,996, compared with £1,902,201 for the corresponding period of 1954, an increase of £309,795. The duty collected on motor spirit this month totalled £50,445, compared with £60.173 for October, 1934, a decrease of £9728. For the 10 months the figures aiv £520,253 and £577,311 respectively, a decrease of £57,058. The collection of tyre tax this month totalled £2216. compared with £2490 in October, 1934, a decrease of £274. For the 10 months the figures are £20,924 and £17,804 respectively. The collections of sales tax in OetorTer totalled £BO,IIB (a new record), compared with £70,214 in October, 1934, an increase of £9904. The total for the 10 months is £708.702, against £579,257 last year. The beer excise collections for October totalled £4890, compared with £5726 for October, 1934, a decrease of £836.
