OBITUARY
MR N. H. MACKAY , The death occurred yesterday at his residence in Frederick street of Mr Neil Hawthorne Mackay, aged 87 years. Mr Mackay was born at Backton, in Norfolk, where his father was a coastguard. He received his. education at Campbelltown, Argyllshire, Scotland, and he learned the baking trade and set up in business there. A man of remarkable physique, he contemplated at one time joining the Life Cuards and passed the necessary examinations, but decided to continue at his own trade instead. Mr Mackay came to New Zealand 61 years ago, settling in Dunedin. He visited the West Coast with one of the early gold rushes, but, failing to meet with success, returned to Dunedin. He thm set up in business in Waikohaiti, and spent much of his time in Port Chalmers. A keen bowler, Mr Mackay was a past-president of the Port Chalmers Club, and was for a time a member of the North-East Valley Club. He subsequently joined the Dunedin Club, and at ths time of his death was one of the oldest howlers in the city. lie was connected with the Miisonic Order for a long period, and when lie paid a visit to the Old Country a few years ago he visited Lodge Kilwinning, Campbelltown, which was the first lodge to which he belonged. Mr Mackay married Miss Mary M'Swan, who was a niece of Mr Colin Allan, the first emigration agent in the province. He is survived by his widow and a family of one son, Dr Donald Mackay, of Dunedin, and two daughters—Miss E. Mackay, of Dunedin, and Mrs J. F. Botha, of Boksburgh, South Africa.
