A PRICELESS RAIN
FALL IN CANTERBURY LONG DRY SPELL BROKEN (Pes United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, October 23. A light but steady rain began to fall in Christchurch early this -nfternoon, increasing in intensity towards evening. Canterbury generally has had a very dry spring and the driest area has been the coastal belt, especially the districts nearest to Christchurch. Until to-day only three points of rain had fallen during October, and on nine wet davs last month 1.83 inches fell This rain, which looks like continuing will be of priceless value Some of the inland districts had half an inch of rain at the week-end. and these have had a heavy fall to-day, so that for them the danger of a drought has passed. The. dry spell has up till the present done little or no harm, but if it had continued much longer h»- results would have been serious. The moisture to-day, a warm rain without ■» stormy wind, will do incalculable good *o the pastures and wheat crops, especially if, as usually happens, this break in the period -f dry weather is followed by other occasional raius.
