Interviewed on Saturday, Mr P. M'Skimming, M.P., chairman of directors of the company, said he had heard of the rumour, but to the best of his knowledge it was without foundation. The company was responsible for the soundings that were being taken at the mouth of the Matau branch of the Molyneux River at Coal Point, with the idea of getting scows and other vessels' of light draught up the river to Kaitangata, where the vessels could be loaded with coal for the coastal ports. Mr. M'Skimming added that anything that might ’ be done by the company in , the future Would be done in the best intcrr ests of the town. Persona! Mr A. V. King, chairman of the Clutha County Council, and Mr A. K. Baxter, clerk, left last night for Wellington to attend the Counties’ Association Conference. Rugby Football. Romahapa was unable to field a team and defaulted ,to Toko I. The former had a weak team composed principally of Third ■' Grade players, who, however, made a very, good showing against the . better combination of their opponents. A strong wind was blowing from the south-west, and in the first spell Clutha had the advantage of this. For the first 15 minutes Star kept the play in Clutha’s twenty-five, until Brown made a break-away, and, picking up just past the halfway flag, ran strongly to score between the posts. He was also successful with the kick at goal. In the second spell Perrin scored for Star, and Barron missed with the kick. Then A.' Barron kicked a penalty goal. From a melee on the line Brown (Star) scored, and A. Barron's kick again failed, the fame ending with the Reds pressing Star ardj but unable to score. Star won by 9 points to, 5 points. Mr A.
