PALMERSTON Rugby Football The Palmerston junior football team travelled to Dunback on Saturday to play the Dunback-Macraes side. After a hardfought game, played under very rough weather conditions, the visitors won by 15 points to 6 points. R. Pope, D. Burrows, and J. Fletcher scored for Palmerston, and P. Murray crossed twice. R. Pope converted a penalty kick for Dun-back-Macraes, and the full-back (Frater) scored. Hockey The Palmerston hockey team travelled to Ranfurly on Saturday to compete in the Maniototo tournament, losing the first two matches by two. goals to ml and the last by two goals to one. WAIMATE Hockey Matches Playing their first matches against teams from other centres, the newlyformed Waimate Hockey Club teams, although defeated, acquitted themselves very creditably on Saturday afternoon. In the women’s match, Winchester defeated Waimate by 9 goals to 3. For Winchester goals were scored by Misses E. Blisset (4), R. Blisset (4) and Airs Preece. Mrs Purvis netted: twice for Waimate, and Aliss M. Foley once. The men’s match was more closely contested. Waimate being defeated by. Geraldine by 4 goals to 1. At half time the score was I—nil1 —nil in Waimate s favour, E. J. Wilson having scored. In the second half Geraldine warmed up to the game and goals were scored by G. Webb (2), R. Hayes and W. Rule. Memorial Service A memorial service, in connection with the passing of Air J. K. Blair, was conducted in the Alorven Presbyterian Church last week by the Rev. W. F. Nichol, of Waimate. The district was well represented at the service, the church being full. Suitable hymns were sung, and the choir rendered the anthem “ Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break.” Air Nichol based his sermon on the words “ None of us liveth to himself and no man dieth to himself.”

Salvation Army Band Concert A band concert was presented by the Salvation Army, in the Olympia Hall on Saturday evening, Major C. Goffin, territorial secretary of the Salvation Army bands in New Zealand, being chairman. The Timaru and Oamaru bands visited Waimate for the occasion. The programme included selections by the massed bands and by the individual bands and_ instrumental quartets and solos. During the afternoon Major Goffin conducted an instructional session for members of the local band and two visiting bodies. Major Goffin was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr G Dash) and by Messrs Kirby and Segar representing the Waimate Silver and Pipe Bands respectively.

Fancy Dress Ball A “hard-up” and fancy dress ball Xvas held in the Waitaki South Hall to mark the twenty-first anniversary of the opening of the hall. There were about 75 couples present, many in costume. The fancy dress prize winners were as follows: —Fancy dress; Mrs J. Solomon and Mr T. Mailiaroa (Maori couple). Hard up: Miss V. Grimson and Messrs G. Todd and William Devlin (equal) 1. Novelty dances were won by Miss V. Hyland and Mr J. Calder (statue waltz) and. by Miss V. Hyland and Mr M. Whittaker (lucky spot waltz). Music was supplied by Miss Wilce’s orchestra from Waimate. and several songs were contributed by Mr T. Mailiaroa. Messrs G. Todd and D. Brosuahan were M.C.’s. Extras were played by Mrs Hewson, Miss R. Adams and Messrs C. Jones and T. Lavery.

Huimai Football Club About 120 couples were present at the Huimai Football Club’s-, annual ball, held in the Morven Hall last week. Music was supplied by Sinclair’s orchestra, and Mr F. J. Bailey carried out the duties of M.C. A lucky spot one-step was won by Miss Cleverley and .Mr B. Wellwood, and a Monte Carlo fox-trot by Miss JL Howden and Mr T. Woods. Mr and Mrs f[. D. Richmond were the winners of a lucky spot fox-trot, and Miss G. Haines and Mr C. Puttick of a Monte Carlo waltz.

Young Farmers’ Club An address on “ Soil Fertility and Maximum Production ” was delivered to the Waihaorunga Young Farmers’ Club at their sixth meeting of the year, by Mr Wraight. of the Dominion Fertiliser Company.

R.S.A. Reunion Mr J. M. King (president) presided at the annual reunion of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Waimate. After the loval and the “Absent Comrades ’ toasts had been honoured, the president welcomed all returned soldiers and repre sentatives from Temuka, Oamaru and Waitaki Hydro Returned Soldiers’ Associations, and also Mr A. IV. Buzan (Mayor of Temuka). the president of the South Canterbury South African War Veterans’ Association, Messrs G. King (president of the Temuka branch), M’Nulty (Oamaru president), and Bignell (Waitaki Hydro) replied on behalf of their associations,

High School Concert In aid of the High School Radio Club, a concert was held at the Waimate High School, songs, instrumental items and the presentation of a sketch, “ The Passing of Arthur,” and a one-act play, “ Archibald.” by the pupils comprising an enjoyable programme. The assembly room was filled to capacity. Rugby Football

Huimai defeated Old Boys by 16 points to 3 in the Sadler Shield'Rugby match. In the second round of the junior knockout competition High School defeated Southern and will meet Huimai in the final. TAPANUI Personal On the eve of his departure from Tapanui, Mr W. Brims, who has been resident here for the past 13 years, was met by the Mayor (Mr J. S. Varcoe), councillors, and a number of citizens on Thursday evening' and presented with an illuminated address. Mr Brims was a member of the Borough Council for many years, and for the past three years and a-half had been chairman of the Works Committee. Stock Sale On Thursday afternoon Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd.,' held a stock sale in their yards. The yarding was a small on|g and the attendance the smallest fodH considerable period. Jj Political Address J A presessional address was given H Mr D. M’Dougall, M.P., in the Towfll Hall on Thursdaj evening, when there! was an attendance of some 70 electors,! who gave the member an attentive hearJ ing. The Mayor (Mr J. S. VarcoeH was in the chair. Mr M’Dougall gavfl his reasons for leaving the Nation® Party, and stated that he would jo® with any party in voting the prese® Government out of power. Mr M'DougalT spoke at length, quoting many figures, showing the rise in taxation during the term of the present Parliament. He referred to the raising of the recent loan in London, which he maintained had not been done on the most advantageous terms. The Minister of Lands was vigorously attacked over purchases by his department of the Brooksdale, Wilden, Golden Valley, and other settlements, which the speaker said were all effected well above market value. In answer to a question, the member said that he was not in favour of the fixation of prices, though at the same time he could not see why the price of butter could not be fixed in the same way as the prices ot wheat had been stabilised. At the conclusion of the address Mr M’Dougal! was accorded a vote of thanks.

LAWRENCE Borough Council The Lawrence Borough Council met on Thursday night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor) and Crs Talboys, Gray, Martin, Colgan, Pitt, and Cotton. Disabled Soldiers’ Products wrote soliciting an order for dog collars. —Received. The Tuapeka County clerk wrote making application for 400 cubic yards of gravel.—Granted. . The chairman of the Works Committee reported that Mr Evans, public works-en-gineer, had inspected the highway that it was proposed to tar seal, and had ad- 1 vised building up the sides and when , consolidated making application for tar | sealing. • . ■ I The chairman of the Finance Commit- I tee reported that the receipts to date j were £1197 Os 8d and expenditure £1412, leaving a debit of £215 4s. The receipts in connection with the Town Hall building were £3142 5s 4d and payments made £3087 17s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £54 7s lOd. The total subsidy received was £364 17s 4d, £ll4 7s 4d in excess of the original amount expected. Mr F. Gray, secretary of the Lawrence Swimming Bath’s Central Committee, reported that the committee had succeeded in raising £725, and the question of a suitable site was now engaging attention. Mr R. C. Moore, solicitor for Mrs M. Nichols, wrote objecting to the selection of section 10, block IX, for the purpose of a swimming bath, as it would mean a serious depreciation of the value of her property. The question of the control i of the baths reconstruction was discussed, and the council decided that it was will- ) ing to take over the baths when built, ; provided the site was approved of and that no liability, was incurred. . | It was decided that the £4O standing to the credit of the Transvaal Patriotc Fund account should be transferred to the | Town Hall building account. Accounts amounting to £1,55 7s 8d were passed for payment.

Bowling Club The annual meeting of the Tuapeka Bowling Club was held on Friday night, Mr R. C. Moore occupying the chair. Mr R. C. Moore was re-elected president. Mr T. Parkhill was elected vicepresident. Three new members were nominated. Mr T. Parkhill was appointed selector.
