THE ENCÆNIA AT OXFORD

HONORARY DEGREES D.C.L. FOR LORD BLEDISLOE (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) (By Air Mail) LONDON, June 29. The Encomia was held on June 27 in the Sheldonian Theatre. The usual procession through the streets of the city started from the hall of Worcester College, where the honorands, the burgesses, heads of houses, and doctors had met to partake of Lord Crewe’s benefaction. The list of distinguished men who received honorary degrees was much smaller than usual.

The honorary degree of doctor of civil law was conferred on Baron Georg Franckeimtein, Austrian Minister in London; the Duke of Alba, who held several important offices in the last days of the Spanish monarchy'; M. Edouard Herriot, three times Prime Minister of France; Viscount Bledisloe; and Sir John Reith, director-general of the 8.8. C.; and Sir Herbert Samuel.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S GREETING. Presenting Lord Bledisloe, the public orator, Dr Cyril Bailey, Fellow of Balliol, said: In Lord Bledisloe w T e see vir Etonensis et CoHegii Universitatis alumnus, qui ab ineunte aetate discendum sibi etatuit Quae cura bonum, qui cultus habendo Sit pecori. With such experience after a successful tenure of the Ministry of Agriculture he became , Governor of New Zealand übi agricolis totique populo auxilum attulit maximum. Among other benefits populo impensis suit dommn ipsam donavit, in qua indigenao olim cum Reglnae Victoriae legatis foedus icerunt. On his departure oratores pecuniam permagnam collegerunt, non ut statua Consulis Soteria statueretur, sed ut, quod ipse volebat, agnculturae studentibus praemia maiora proponerentur.

The vice-chancellor greeted Lord Bledisloe with the following words:— Agrestum et domi et toto divisorum orbe praesens numen. The procession left the theatre to the strains of Elgar’s “ Imperial March.” The recipients of honorary degrees were, as usual, entertained at luncheon by the warden and fellows of All Souls’ College in the Codrington Library, together with a large and distinguished company. The vice-chancellor and Mrs Lya gave a garden party later in the afternoon in the grounds of Worcester College.
