LORD BLEDISLOE

(From Gob Own Correspondent.) (By Air Mail) LONDON, June 20.

As president-elect of the National Council of Social Service, Lord Bledisloe presided at the annual meeting, accompanied by Lady Bledisloe. He mentioned that there were no slums in New Zealand and no marked gap between the social classes. The spirit of mutual helpfulness had been the chief factor there in combating destitution and despair. He was'pleased to see in the annual report the progress being made throughout England with the teaching of handcrafts. The unemployed suffered from a lack of adaptability and resourcefulness, and with the training provided by the handcraft clubs they would become more suitable for settlement in the Empire. Viscount Bledisloe has been elected a director on the London board of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. A few days ago, at a dinner of the Royal Geographical Society at which the Duke of Kent spoke on the importance of aerial photography as a means of the collection of accurate knowdedge of the earth’s surface, Lord Bledisloe replied to the toast of “ The Guests.” The latter referred to the close of his tenure of office as Governor-General of New Zealand and described that country as “ the gem of the British Empire oversea.” It is officially announced in the London Gazette, issued to-day, that Lord Bledisloe has taken the title of Viscount Bledisloe of Lydney in the County of Gloucester.
