DELUGE AND GALES

PORT BAHIA LASHED TERRIBLE TOLL OF LIVES (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RIO DE JANEIRO, May 4. (Received May 5, at 8.30 p.m.) Torrential rains, accompanied by gales, which lashed Port Bahia during the past five days, have taken a toll of at least 400 lives, while several hundred were injured and over 1000 are homeless. Five hundred buildings were demolished, including the Hotel Paris, overlooking the bay. The rain caused repeated landslides on the higher ground surrounding the bay, while the lower sections are flooded. Railway and motor transportation has been halted and communications with the outside world have been badly disrupted.

The Government has declared a state of public calamity and volunteers and military forces are being mobilised for rescue work.
