WOMEN’S GOLF
OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND COMPLETED Play in the Otago Women’s Golf Championship, which was postponed on Thursday on account of the stormy weather, was continued on the Balmacewen links yesterday in weather which, although for the main part dry, was not conducive to particularly good golf. The cold southwesterly wind which blew throughout the day was very gusty, making conditions, especially in the large paddock, extremely tricky. The second qualifying round was played in the* morning and produced the best gross score of the two preliminary rounds, Sliss Rutherford (Christchurch) going round in 80. She took three 6’s on the way out, the first nine holes costing her 43, but she more than redeemed herselt on the return journey, which she covered in 37, scoring under the unfavourable conditions. She obtained no fewer than four 3's on the homeward trip, these being registered at the tenth, fourteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth greens respectively. The other players who scored under 90 were Miss Fleming (Christchurch), Mrs W. A. Scott (Timaru), each with 85, Mrs Dodgshun, with 86, and Miss Kyle with 88. OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP The first round of match play for the championship, was held in the afternoon, the weather keeping fine until the latter part of the day, when heavy shower# added to the discomfort caused by the blustery wind. With one exception, all the matches were won by comfortable margins, Mrs Gibson and Miss Haggitt fighting out the closest round of the afternoon, and finishing on the eighteenth green, where Mrs Gibson won 2 up. Miss Fleming continued to play sound golf to beat Mrs Speirs (Invercargill) 7 and 5, and Mrs Taylor proved the steadier of the two in her match with Miss Kyle, whom she defeated 5 and 4,. Mrs M'Lean was erratic on the greens and could not keep pace with Mrs Carr, who played good golf to win 7 and 5. Mrs Scott and Mrs Lemon were fairly evenly matched, the game going to the sixteenth green before Mrs Scott emerged victorious by 3 and 2. Mrs M'Carthy’a long experience in match play stood her in good stead in her match with. Mrs Caffin, whom she defeated by the good margin of 7 and 5, her opponent failing to reproduce the form she showed in the preliminary rounds. Miss Rutherford was not unduly troubled by the boisterous conditions, and played forceful golf to beat Mrs Aspinall 6 and 4.
