WAIKOUAITI School Committee At the monthly meeting of the Walkouaiti School Committee held on Wednesday evening advice was received from the secretary of the Otago Education Board to the effect that Miss M'Lachlan, of Colac Bay, would commence duty on the Waikouaiti School staff after the approaching term holidays. The headmaster (Mr Nind) was requested to remind parents who still owed for last year’s dental clinic fees of their liability in this matter. Discussing a communication from the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) regarding the King’s jubilee celebrations, in which a special request regarding the entertainment of children was made, the committee decided to wait on the Borough Council with a view of conferring with the council on the matter and with an offer of assistance in carrying out a programme suitable for the occasion. PALMERSTON Harrier Club The annual meeting of the North Otago Harrier Club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Ross presiding over a good attendance. The members stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mr I. Day, who has suffered a bereavement. The secretary was instructed to invite the Oamaru Club to hold its Edmond Cup trial run at Palmerston. It was decided to hold an interclub run at Dunedin with the Dunedin Harrier Club on May 4 if the date was suitable to Dunedin. It was decided that the opening run be held on April 27, commencing at the school.

BALCLUTHA High School Board At a special meeting of the South Otago High School Board of Governors 26 applications were received for the vacant position of junior master, but no_ decision was made, pending further inquiries. The rector (Mr J. Garfield Anderson) and Mr A. E. Lock submitted reports as to a school of agriculture for South _ Otago, and these were approved, to be discussed publicly at the next board meeting. Sympathetic reference was made to the death of Mrs Roy, and it was agreed to forward a letter of condolence to Mr Roy and family.

Bridge Celebrations Receipts from the bridge openiqg celebrations amount to about £145, and it is proposed that the surplus be divided amongst deserving local organisations. MILTON Personal Mr Henry Marryatt, exchange clerk on the staff of the Milton Post Office, has received notice of transfer to Christchurch office. He will be succeeded locally by Mr Nelson Clulee, of the Lawrence staff, who will commence his new duties on Wednesday. The Rev, J. L. Gray, of Jagadhri, India, who is at present on furlough, will conduct the morning service at Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church on Sunday, as part of the missionary campaign in the Clutha Presbytery.

Profits from Gala The recent gala promoted by the local branch of the Royal Health Society resulted in the society’s funds benefiting to the extent of about £SO.

Rugby Football As a preliminary to the commencement of the banner competition. Toko Football Club will commence its season with a friendly match against Waitahuna on the local Domnin, while a Second Grade team will play Henley on the latter’s ground.

Methodist Church Bazaar

A highly successful bazaar in aid of the funds of the Milton Methodist Church was held in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday. There were good attendances at both afternoon and evening seosions. and good business was transacted. It is anticipated that the church funds will benefit to the extent of £BS after payment of expenses. Heavy Rainfall

After two or three days’ spell ot unusually warm weather, a heavy rainfall was experienced in Milton during last night, and the rain gauge recording for 24 hours ended 9 o’clock yesterday morning showed a total fall of 1.13 inches, the greater portion of which occurred after 9 o’clock on Wednesday night. Triennial Elections

Although nomination day has been fixed for April 20 for the triennial elections for municipalities and counties, there is at present no indication of much public interest being aroused in Milton or within the Bruce County. Members of the Borough Council are fairly quiescent regarding their intentions. although nupours are current that some do not intend seeking re-election. The names of one or two likely aspirants as councillors are being mentioned. The retiring Mayo.r "Mr James Gray) has not yet decided whether to offer his services for the mayoralty again. Mr Gray has held the mayoral office for six years, being first elected unopposed in April, 1929. A large number of ratepayers have requested Mr D. M. Mawson (late town clerk) to offer his services as a candidate for the mayoralty. Mr Mawson has not vet given his answer to the petitioners. Mr Alexander Rennie intends to seek re-election as a borough councillor, and also as Milton Borough representative on the South Otago Hospital Board. Mr D. M'Gregor (Milburn) intends seeking re-election to the Bruce County Council, and also as one of the county’s representatives on the South Otago Hospital Board. Bruce County Elections

With one exception, the retiring members of Bruce County Council intend seeking re-election at the triennial elections next month, and there is at present no indication of any opposition forthcoming. Cr H. AI. Driver is the “ father ” of the council with 36} years’ service; Crs Jasper Clark and D. Gardyne have each 26} years’ service, Cr W. J. Sheat 17} years, Cr A. Renton 15 years. Cr A. King 12} years. Cr D. APGrcgor 12 years, Cr V, Wilson II years and Cr J. Boylen 4 years. Crs J. Allison and AV. Aloore were both elected three years ago. Cr Gardyne, the member for Gienledi Riding, who has been in indifferent health for a considerable time, does not intend seeking re-election.

Thousands of bits of wood, cardboard, stones, sponge, paper, and wire were used by Air W. E. Rose, a Plymouth business man, in constructing a Lilliputian city. His model is 4ft Gin long and 18in wide. Gyp, claimed by his owner to be the cleverest dog in the world, has yet to be set a task beyond his powers. Air Ralph Heathcote, of the Bridge Inn, Calver, near Bakowcll, Derbyshire, sent Gyp to the post officer with his old license and a 10s note. Gyp, an eight-year-old sheep dog, returned with his new license and the half crown change. He separates fowls when they are fighting, and drives away the culprit. He brings to his master slippers, AVel’ingtons, clogs, boots or shoes, whichever are asked for, and even differentiates between the various colours. Gyp’s latest job is to take four greyhound puppies for daily exercise. Ho holds the lead in his mouth aud keeps the youngsters out of mischief.
