HARDEST WORKED MINISTER
DEFENCE QF MR COATES "STICKS TO HIS JOB" (Peb United Pkess Association) ELTHAM { November 28. Answering facetiouß interjections relative to the Minister in question, Mr C. A. Wilkinson, Independent member for Egmont, who addressed a meeting of the Eltham Farmers' Union, made a spirited reply in defence of Mr J. G. Coates. Mr Wilkinson had just finished a trenchant criticism of the Government's proposals for the rehabilitation of the dairy industry, and he replied to an interjector: " I might say that Mr Coates is the hardr est-worked member in the Ministry, and he sticks to his job. despite the immense strain of office. Furthermore, he is a Very poorly paid man f6r the work he does. Why, do you know Mr Coates actually gets very considerably less than some of his departmental heads His work requires of him a great deal of intelligence and good judgment, and entails an immense amount of physical labour on h»9 part. I am not going to run him down because, rightly or wrongly, he is. doing the big job.'' ' '■■• ■ .. The meeting passed a resolution protesting against a higher rate of interest than 3 J per cent, under the .Mortgage Corporations Bill, and urged suitable provision for writing off lost capital on mortgages on farm lands.
