KENNEL CLUB

THE OPENING , SHOW AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS Those responsible for the organiation of the Otago Kennel Club’s first show have reason to congratulate themselves. In every respect the opening day yesterday in the Brydone Hall was a distinct success, and exhibitors and the public alike pay tribute; to the efficiency of the organisation. It - is the opinion of the judges (Messrs H. Hinchcliff and D. D. Wilsorf) that if the enthusiasm in evidence yesterday is maintained Otago will rank in the course of a very few years as the outstanding club in the metropolitan areas of New Zealand. . A total of 191 dogs was entered, and there were few breeds which were not represented. When it is recalled that the club has been, in existence for but two years and that all the initial difficulties associated with placing it on a sound footing have had to be met, it will be conceded that the organisers have reason to be -satisfied with the response which has met their efforts. Perhaps'.the outstanding thing about the show, ■ apart from the .number, and the excellence of the entries, was the manner in which the dogs were exhibited. This was a point which impressed itself with particular force upon the judges, who stated that in their opinion the benching and general outlay compared .more than favourably with what could be seen at any other show in the Dominion. The long lines of neatly-benched dogs, ranging from the tiniest toys to a couple of St. Bernards, were a tribute to the manner in which the organisation of the show had been planned, and exhibitors could scarcely but nave ■ been satisfied with the facilities placed at their disposal. Speaking of the standard of the dogs entered,, the judges stated that the quality generally was fully up to what could be seen at other shows in the large metropolitan areas. Perhaps the strongest class was that devoted to rough-haired collies. It was particularly pleasing to them, however, to note the improvement in several '•» breeds, notably the Scottish ‘terriers, collies, Irish terriers, and Labradors. There were also one or two nice Alsatians, and ■ some promising young Airedales were brought forward. The outstanding dog was Miss A. M. Kerr’s .old English sheep dog, Opihi Rupert, which was awarded the prize for _ the best dog or bitch in the show. This dog .had a notable string of successes during the day, and appealed greatly to. the judges. - ' The show will be open to the public to-day and till 9.30 this evening. The following is the prize list; TOYS, TERRIERS, AND NONSPORTING DOGS Judge: Mr D. D. Wilson. AUSTRALIAN TERRIERS. " Dogs, limit. Two entries—Mrs K. Richardson’s Nipper 1, Miss E. H.
