BRIGHTON RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION

The Brighton Ratepayers’ Association held its monthly meeting on Thursday evening. Mr A. P. Burton, vicepresident, occupied the chair. A letter was received from the Minister of Lands stating that the complaints regarding the existence of an open drain on the parking area at Ocean View would be investigated. The attention of the association was drawn to the condition of Burton’s road, where trees were growing over the road and blocking the view. It was decided that the secretary write to the property owners concerned. The following resolutions were carried unanimously: “That the secretary be instructed to write to the Automobile Association of Otago expressing surprise that that body at its meeting of the 9th inst. should have publicly expressed its strong approval of the recent by-law of the Taieri County Council affecting the whole length of the main road through Brighton, which this is convinced' is unnecessarily drastic, and pointing out that, in view of the hostile attitude adopted by the Automobile Association at its same meeting towards a somewhat similar city by-law, this association is forced to the conclusion that the full effect of the county by-law had not been explained to the meeting.” (2) “That the secretary be instructed to write to the Taieri County Council expressing regret that the council should have confirmed without modification the by-law so strongly opposed by the residents of Brighton prohibiting parking for longer than ten minutes on the main road through Brighton.” (3) “That the secretary be instructed to write to the Taieri County Council expressing disappointment at its decision that the footpath applied for by the association on the main road leading down to Jones’s road is unnecessary, and also expressing surprise that the member for the riding should have shown at the last meeting of the council and in the presence of the association’s representatives such a lack of knowledge of this particular locality, and urging the council to reverse its decision and in the interests of public safety to have the work completed before the Christmas holiday.”
