BALCLUTHA The tender of the Balclutha Gravel Company (Messrs Wood and Reid) has been accepted for the building of the approaches, on both sides of the river, of the new traffic bridge. The work is one of considerable magnitude, and it is expected that a considerable number of men will be employed. The bulk, of, the spoil will be drawn from the. river bank by means of the drag-line owned by the successful tenderers. One firm of dairy farmers in Owaka district, which last season 'milked 50 cows, has turned all its animals out with the calves, two; to each cow, and intend to go, in for beef production in future, hoping for the development of the chilled beef trade. ■ Dr Norman Greeuslade, who is a son of the late. Rev. Mr Greeuslade, one-time Methodist minister at Balclutha, arrived on Saturday to take up his new position as house surgeon at Balclutha Hospital. Kaitangata A defeated Owaka. MILTON Four rinks from Port Chalmers' Bowling Club will visit Milton on Labour Day to play the annual home-and-home match against the local club. A progress report on Milton’s gravitation water supply scheme, submitted by the engineer (Mr W. H. Stevens) at the monthly meeting of the Borough Count?! stated that the. wet weather experienced last iponth prevented the work proceeding according to schedule. If normal conditions had prevailed the pipe laying would be under way. Some 7000 feet of steel pipes and headworks fittings have been carted from the railway station to the end of the metalled portion of the road and deposited there in readiness for rushing to the headworks when weather conditions permit cartage over the. clay tracks to the headworks. Nearly three miles of trenches are dug in readiness for laying the water main. The -South, Otago Cricket Association’s shield fixtures commenced on Saturday afternoon. Hood captured four wickets for 17, including the hat trick. In their second innings Milton declared with six wickets for 90 runs iF. Marryatt 22, E. Giver- 18). Requiring 78 rujjs for victory, Clutha obtained these with the loss of only three wickets, Duncan (24 not out) and Moffatt (18 not out), being top scorers. .
