SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE
A FESTIVAL OF MUSIC To make amends for the elimination of choral nnisic from the ceremony of dedicating the Shrine, of Remembrance in Melbourne on November 11, it was recently announced that a great open-air musical festival would be held .in Como Park on the afternoon of Sunday, November 4. Massed choirs would be asked to participate, and the* committee hoped that a choir of 3000 voices would sing excerpts from oratorios. The choir would be supported by six brass bands. The programme would include four anthems ■ —the chorus “ And the Glory,” from Handel’s “ Messiah “ The Heavens are Telling,” from Haydn’s “ Creation ”; and Mozart’s “ Gloria.” These anthems have beea rehearsed by church choirs and choral societies for some time for the dedication, but now they will be sung at the festival instead. To add interest to the recital, negotia-. tions are in progress for the services of several visiting singers of international reputation to lead the choir. Professor Bernard Heinze will be the conductor. The bands, will be led by the Grenadier Guards Band, which will then be visiting Melbourne, and a first class band from New Zealand will also play. The recitals (says the Argus) should be the greatest of its kind ever given in Melbourne.
