MUNICIPAL ORGAN RECITAL
Another interesting programme of organ music was presented by the city organist (Dr V. E. Galway) in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, the compositions covering a wide range of organ literature and embodying a number of works which have long been favourites with music lovers. The recital opened with an artistic perform: ance of Hollins’s graceful Minuet, which was followed by the lovely Brahms air, “We Wandered, Once,” the restrained, reflective atmosphere of which was admirably caught and sustained. Bach’s well-known Passacnglia received highly competent and effective treatment, the organist displaying the beauty and flexibility of a number of the lighter stops. The allegro from Widor’s Symphony in G minor was an exhilarating work which received a cultured and artistic reading, a contrast being provided by Kjerulf’s Wiegeulied, a flowing, lovely lullaby, which was performed with attractive depth of interpretative shading. The ever-popular Largo from Dvorak’s “ New World Symphony ” was followed by “The Arbutus Tree,” by Stanford, an intriguing and melodious composition, which received musicianly treatment, the recital concluding with an impressive performance of Wagner’s “ Epithalamium.” The solo violinist, -Mr Reg. Suttonn, played the well-known "Air on the G String,” by Bach, in competent and artistic stv’e.. Dr Galway providing a sympathetic and unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Mr Snttonn also played Tschaikowsky’s “Chanson Triste” and the Wieniawski “ Kuyanrah,” two works of sharply contrasting moods, in confident and accomplished fashion, maintaining full, even tone and a high degree of executive skill.
