LOWERING DIGNITY
SUNDAY ROWING RACES SATURDAY DECIDED UPON. Relieving that the. holding of rowing races on a Sunday was beneath the dignity of the Canterbury Rowing Association, that body on Tuesday night decided against a proposal to run an inter-club eight-oar race and “ make a picnic of it ” on a Sunday. “ All sorts of sports and competitions are now hold on a Sunday. It is an open slather on Sundays at the tennis courts,” declared Mr, E, S. Vclvin, in recommending that the association hold an inter-club eight-oar race at a Sunday picnic. The secretary (Mr E. J. Hobbs) : That opens up a very big question for the association to decide. We could not advertise the date. Mr L. Byers said that the City Council had turned down an application from the League football authorities to.hold a second match. on a Sunday, on the grounds that a football match was on a plane different from tennis and golf, in which players participated for their, own individual recreation. Mr J. B. Taylor: We, would go out for our own recreation. “It may sound all right to us,” remarked the president (Mr F. D. Kesteven); “but it may not be wise from the public point of view. Such races on, a Sunday would lower the dignity of the association.” Mr W. L. Whittington agreed with Mr Kesteven’s view. * One argument advanced was that the time of the race on a Sunday could be made to suit the tide on the Waimakariri, whereas on a Saturday the time would be restricted to the convenience of rowers who were working. A motion that an inter-club race be held on a Sunday was lost, and it was decided to row it on Saturday, December 8.
