WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION

OTAGO' DISTRICT CONVENTION. The Otago District Women's Christian Temperance Union held its annual convention at Mosgiel on Wednesday. Mrs Bedford, district president, was in the chair. After the opening services a welcome was tendered to the delegates by Mrs Bedford, Mrs Hiett replying. ’ ' The Rev. H. Graham, on behalf of the Ministers’ Association, also welcomed the delegates. , Forty delegates answered to the roll call.. Reports were given by the district secretary and the treasurer, also reports from the different unions. The president gave an impressive address and the delegates were cheered and encouraged as they listened. Miss Smyth, the Oamaru W.C.T.U. president, was presented with an honours badge in recognition of her work in gaining 15 new members for her union in one year. The following officers were re-elected: President, Mrs Bedford; vice-president, Mrs Peart; treasurer. Mrs Sanders; secretary, Miss Gray. , - The following resolutions were passed; (a) “This convention strongly protests against the Government having anything to do with art unions or State lotteries as being contrary to the commercial wellbeing of the country, as well as a danger to the morals of its people.” (b) “ Owing to the fact of there being such a large credit balance of £1,000,000 in the unemployment fund, we request the Government to make more liberal allowances to the unemployed men pnd women.” (c) “ This Otago District Convention of the W.C.T.U. again urges the Government to inaugurate a system of compulsory Dominion superannuation whereby every one on reaching 60 years of age would be entitled to a pension.” Other resolutions referred to women police, inadequate bathing costumes, reciprocity of old age pensions, redistribution of licenses, nationality of married women, protesting against liquor in the King Country, undesirable film exhibitions, misleading newspaper advertisements in regard to liquor, disarmament, temperance teaching in primary schools, in support of the Bib!e-in-Schools Enabling Bill.

Votes of thanks were paid to the Mostriel ladies for their hospitality and to the Presbyterian Church officers for the use of their halls. The next convention will be held at South Dunedin. ;
