DUNEDIN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by Messrs J. Wilson (chairman), W. A. Scott, F. T. Anderson, F. Wilkinson, J. L. Salmond and S. B Macdonald. The superintendent of the City Brigade (Mr J. J. Salmon) in his report stated that 48 calls had been received at headquarters during August. The calls were as follows:—Fires 6, chimney fires 28, rubbish and bush 1, false alarms 13 (malicious 5, justifiable 4, automatic 4), No serious fires occurred during the month. The highest loss was £ls, and the total loss £SO, There was no increase in the number of chimney fires. Fourteen were attended from the Central Station, seven from South Dunedin, six from Roslyn, and one from Green Island. All chimney fires were now reported to the police. A number of prosecutions have followed, while several were pending. The property affected was:—Outhouse 1, dwellings 3, shop and dwelling 1, commercial building 1. Causes of fires were:—Careless use of matches 2, rats gnawing matches 1, defective chimney 1, overheating of tar 1, unknown 1. All plant was in, good order. Minor repairs had been carried out to the engine of machine No. 14, and new brake shoes had been fitted to motor No. 6. The staff had been employed on the work of alarm and plug inspection, and ordinary routine work. The repairing of the cottage in Bradshaw street had been completed. The water pressure registered at the various stations was:—South Dunedin: 9 a.m., 1001 b; 9 p.m., 1401 b. Roslyn: 9 a.m., 1201 b; 9 p.m., 1301 b. Central Station: 9 a.m., 851 b; 9 p.m., 1401 b. The St. John Ambulance travelled 1270 miles and transported 130 patients during the month. —The report was adopted. The General Committee reported that accounts amounting to £IBOS 17s 5d had been approved for payment.
