A survey of the Lancashire coalfields issued by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Britain states that the proved coal resources available in the county are estimated at 4,000,000,000 tons. The coalfield covers roughly a triangular area 400 square miles in extent, from Burnley in the north to Prescot in the west and Stalybridge in the east, .The individual seams are variable in thickness and constitution,.but are all coking coals, some having this property strongly developed and most having a high calorific, that is, heat-producing value.
