Sutcliffe and Wyatt opened with extreme caution. The total was only 12 when the latter lost his leg stump. Sutcliffe drove a straight ball to Bradman at raid-off, and ran, but Leyland refused to run, and a smart return saw Sutcliffe run out.
Hendren failed to sec out the same over, and the total was three for 20 Human batted brightly, but both Leyland and Nichols were dropped early in their innings. Lcyland’s was a very poor effort. Nichols’s 50 occupied 90 minutes, after which he and Townsend hit valiantly. The partnership was worth 99 in 66 minutes, when O’Reilly was recalled, and dismissed Nichols with his first ball. Nichols hit one six and 13 fours.
