RATING POLL
PRESENT SYSTEM RETAINED BIG MAJORITY RECORDED FAIRLY LARGE VOTE CAST By a majority of 4732 votes out of a total of 12,104 valid votes cast, the ratepayers of Dunedin yesterday declared against the proposal that in the future the system of rating property should be on the basis of the unimproved value. The votes recorded were as follows: — For the proposal .. .. 3686 Against the proposal .. 8418 Informal S 3.
A feature of the poll which aroused public interest to an unusual extent was the fact that at only two booths was a vote in favour of the proposal recorded. These were Martin’s shop, South road, and the Methodist Hall, Wesley street. When the last poll on the rating issue was held, the voting in favour of rating on the unimproved value was 5700, while 8104 voted against it, the majority against being 2404, as compared with 4732 on this occasion. The fact that 12,187 votes in a total of 21,000 eligible to vote were cafit indicates the very considerable degree of interest excited by the issue. The heavy poll in 1931 was influenced by the fact that the municipal elections were held on the same day. A little over 100 people gathered outside the Town Hall, when, shortly after 8.30 p.m., the town clerk (Mr G. A. Lewin) announced the result, which was greeted with cheers, while one enthusiast announced in no uncertain voice that things had gone better than lie expected.
