BOXING
PALMER-CAMPBELL FIGHT. Never in the history of boxing in Timnru has such interest been evinced ns for the Ambrose Palmer and Alan Campbell bout, to take place next week. The ring exploits of the visiting champion during the past few years have received such wide publicity that his appearance in a Timani ring is eagerly awaited. Palmer is the present holder of the Commonwealth and Dominion open title, and is considered by many of his countrymen to have an excellent chance of annexing the world’s lightheavyweight title should Max Rosenbloom be induced to visit Australia for the Melbourne centenary celebrations. Palmer, in his more important contests, has achieved success by his speed and elusiveness, and his wonderful ability to take advantage of any openings provided by his- opponent's mistakes. Such tactics were clearly demonstrated in his bout at Invercargill with Maurice Strickland. Despite the visiting champion’s wonderful record and fighting ability, the Timani boxer is not over-awed, and is confident he will fully extend the visitor. Campbell considers that Palmer is an adept at close range, and can throw punches with lightning speed from any angle, but owing to his shorter reach is not so dangerous at long range. Campbell considers that his work-outs with Tommy Fairhall will prove of great assistance to him in his coming contest. Fairhall, as followers of the sport know, has few equals for ringcraft, and under his instruction Campbell should be fully prepared for the wily visitor. Mr J. Kilmartin (Dunedin) has accepted the appointment as referee for the contest.
