THE BAKING TRADE ALLEGATIONS OF BLACKMAIL SYDNEY, August 31. Mr A. F, Kirkland, president of the Master Bakers’ Association, made allegations before the Royal Commission which is inquiring into the baking industry of blackmail in the trade. He said that men had established bakery businesses and then indulged in price-cutting tactics for the purpose of being bought out from the master bakers’ stabilisation fund. The fund had cost the master bakers between £7OOO and £BOOO a year. RAMMED WHALE FOUND DEAD SYDNEY, August 31. The whale that was rammed by a Manly ferry steamer was found dead in the harbour, and was towed out to sea. A deep gash on its side gave evidence of the collision. FIRE IN A SAWMILL SYDNEY, August 31. Damage estimated at £7OOO was caused by fire, which destroyed Pidock Bros.’ sawmill at Casino. This is the second occasion within five years on which Pidock Bros, have lost their sawmill by lire. OUTBREAK OF ANTHRAX SYDNEY, August 31. Three deaths from anthrax occurred among stock in the Alstonville district, on the north coast. A calf and two horses died suddenly. FUEL BLENDING PROCESS
SYDNEY, August 31. (Received August 31, at 11.15 p.m ) Mr J. C. Whiteman left by the Mamma for New Zealand, which he will visit at the request of the Dominion Government to consult regarding the production of local motor spirit. Mr Whiteman is the inventor of a fuel-blead-ing process based on a mixture of vcg-.-table alcohol with mineral spirit. Dr Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific arftl Industrial Research, in Wellington said last night that some correspondence had passed between the New Zealand Government and Mr Whiteman, but the latter was coining to New Zealand on his own volition.
