PORT CHALMERS NEWS

PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE A meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League was' held on Monday night, Mr A. Bell presiding. The town clerk advised that the brush fence at Mussel Bay would be extended as suggested by the league.—The chairman said it was very pleasing to kfaow that the council was taking notice of any suggestions made by the league. Mr T. Anderson, president of the Port Chalmers Relief Workers’ Association, wrote relative to a combined'deputation from the Progressive Laegue, the waterside workers, arid - the Relief Workers’ Association, waiting on the 'Borough Council and asking for its_ assistance in placing before the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce and the Harbour Board the desirability of having more marine repair work brought to Port Chalmers. That; was at first proposed, but further consideration had decided the Relief Workers’ Association that, in its opinion, the Progressive League should call a public meeting of business people and delegates from the 1 three bodies mentioned, when the matter of repair work and other questions affecting the progress of the borough could be discussed. —The chairman asked members whether the league could do anything in the matter,—rSeveral members said they did not think'.it was!.the league’s! place to call., a public meeting.‘ j That was a matter for the Mayor of the town. ‘ The suggestion to bring more ships to Port Chalmers was in the right Mr W. D. Campbell. said there 5 was ■agood deal of work that required attention at Port . Chalmers. t The wharves, for instance, were, in a disgraceful state. Cranes for handling cargo were needed, If the three bodies referred to, with the active support of, the business people* made a move, something would no doubt be done. —Mr T. Mathewson pointed out ■ that the Otago Expansion League would be the better body to take the matter up. The , Progressive League and the council had representatives on the Expansion League, so that united action could be taken for promoting the interests of Otago, as a whole. It would be in the interests of the city, as well as Port Chalmers; if more shipping work was carried, out. Seventy per. cent.-of the-wages earned at Port Chalmers went to Dunedin. Mr W. J, Wilson said that the calling of a public meeting was the function of the Mayor. ■ The league would give its support to the relief, workers’ suggestion to endeavour to. bring more work to the town. —Mr T. Mackie thought that the position would be clarified if the letter from the Relief Workers’ Association was forwarded to the council. Then that body and the Mayor would consider it. The .matter would not be dropped were it referred to the council. —After further discussion, it was resolved to forward the letter! to the council, as suggested, with a covering note stating that the league was of the opinion that every endeavour should be made to bring' more, work to Port Chalmers.

The desirability of : preserving the native bush in the Mihiwaka area was again discussed. The council, it was stated, had the matter of appointing rangers under discussion, and three were likely to be appointed.' ' ■ It was reported that a gang of men was now engaged in clearing away weeds and grass in the old cemetery.
