POUNAWEA

TO THE ED}TOK. Sir, —The letter of Mr Paajie recently appearing in your paper admirably sets out the urgent necessity that exists for the taking of immediate steps for the preservation of this beauty_ spot, for the benefit of posterity. I believe it is a fact that certain public-spirited local residents are doing their utmost to bring this matter to the notice of all concerned, and that a public meeting is to be held in the near future. -It is to be hoped that the time and place of such meeting will be adequately advertised, so that not only local residents will attend, but also those town and city dwellers who, like Mr Paape, having once visited Pounawea, realise the loss to the community that would be sustained if this beautiful piece of country were reduced to mere agricultural land. It ought not to be an insuperable task to devise ways and means of preventing this, and acquiring the land pro bono publico, so that future generations may be assured of a glimpse of what Gatlins scenery has been. When one realises the clearances and changes that have taken place, as Mr Paape points out, during the past 30 years, it becomes increasingly apparent that now is the time for action, and I would therefore emphasise to the promoters of the scheme for the public acquisition of this particular meeting being well and widely advertised, and such local and other authorities or persons who mav have power to help, being specially notified in good time to enable them to be present or represented.—l am. etc., 11. A. S.
