A SONOROUS VOICE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir—ln the news in brief column of to-day’s issue there is a statement that the tap of a hammer had been heard in the Mount Egmont district at a distance of three miles, and even further, by another party. On reading it I was reminded that when living in Gloucestershire, in the old town of Cirencester, now more than 50 years ago, we had at that time as our town crier a man named Kettle, if my memory serves me right. He had a very sonorous voice, and it was said that the same Mr Kettle had been heard at the top of Birhp Hill (the Cotswolds) crying nsh in the city of Gloucester, some seven miles away.—l am, etc., Daniel Smith. Musselburgh, August 27.
