IMMORTALITY
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I have been following the discussions in your columns on the above subject with much interest. Since the controversialists have not agreed upon the meaning of the term and Mr Hamill says that he is retiring from .the discussion, may I be permitted to make a few remarks? . The issue really was; Can or does consciousness exist apart from the living body? Christianity rests on the assumption that it can so exist and does. I am not aware that Charles Darwin ever accepted that view, and I submit that none of its exponents has ever been able to show that he did. In point of fact, I think there are very good grounds for concluding that the Christians themselves are not very sure about it. I have often listened to the Christian burial service, and the words “ Sure and certain hope ’’ always convey to me a sense of doubt. Hope can never be sure and it sure, hope is superfluous. Is it meant that Christians are sure that they have a hope? I shall be glad of- enlightenment. I am, etc.. Rationalist.
