MINOR RELIEF SCHEMES ILLUMINATING FIGURES (From Odb Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON', August , 27. Illuminating details the present, extent of several of the Unemployment Board's minor schemes for unemployment relief and revealing the total cost of these schemes up to the present, together with the number of men who have benefited, were supplied in an interview to-duy by the Acting Minister of Employment (Mr J. A. Young). The information covers the period from the inception of the 4a, 4b and the small farm schemes to August 18 last, the date up to which the figures have been calculated. Mr Young’s figures were as follows: 4a SCHEME (Providing farm labour for developmental purposes, whereby the farmer finds part of the lodging and wages.) THE BUILDING SUBSIDY NEARLY 300 ABROGATIONS ; AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT. (From Oue Pablxamentaby Reporter. )V • WELLINGTON, .AuSust 27. Nearly 300 applications have already been received by the , Uuemploymeii' Board for assistance under the extends 1 building subsidy scheme.. Up to August 18—one month after the scheme had'been announced—2l7 of these applications, involving works to a total value of £133,800 and providing work for 807 men, had been approved. Up to the, same date 65 applications, involving 244 men and the sum of £40,684, had boei 1 declined. The Acting Minister of Em ployment (Mr J. A. Young) explain-to-day that the applications declined were in respect : pf work, which was iioi deemed to come within the scope of the scheme or work which, in the opinion of the Unemployment Board, would have proceeded without the assistance of subsidies. It was, not the intention of the board to grant; subsidies; to those people who had already undertaken building schemes without expecting assistance through the unemployment schemes. Of the total cost of works approved •by the board. Mr Young explained that £115,787 represented the amount which would be paid dircdtly or indirectly in wages. The.. Unemployment Board would find approximately £117,237 in subsidies.
