OTAGO RUGBY UNION
WEEKLY MEETING The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugaiy 'Union was held last night. The presideoife (Mr John Mitchell) occupied the chair. 1 • A letter was received from the Alhambra Club stating that the Union WDlub was playing itwo men who had not} obtained a clearance from the AlhanaXira Club.—The complaint was referred to tilie Union Club. Mr Harris reported that Messrs Pea,r-. son, Wootton, and himself had waited] on-the Reserves Committee of the City] Council in connection with the improve- -j ments being carried out on Bathgate Park. They had been informed that the Reserves Committee had no intention of > doing the two grounds this season. Only one ground would be dealt with in the meantime. Mr Harris stated that the Southern Club was quite prepared to remain on the park next year.—The- report was received.
J. 0. M'Giilivray, secretary of the Canterbury Rugby Union, wrote thanking the union for the hospitality, extended to the members of their Second Grade representative team which had played at Dunedin. Received. FOURTH GRADE COMPETITION.
Mr Wootton, chairman of the Flag Committee, recommended that the Fourth Grade competition be closed and that the Christian Brothers be declared the winners. The recommendation was adopted, and it was decided to send a letter congratulating the team on its achievement. MATQH WITH ALL BLACKS.
A. E. Neilson, secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union, wrote as follows: — " I have to acknowledge receipt of your Jetter of July 31 and note your objections to the playing of a match against the New Zealand team upon that team's return to New Zealand. As arrangements are well in hand for this match, I regret that we cannot now go, back on these arrangements. Furthermore, the public have always clamoured to see a New Zealand team in action after it has played on tour, and so gained combination; and, still further, this is considered an excellent opportunity of arranging for a useful trial match in view of the selection of a New Zealand team to tour Great Britain next year. I am sure you will admit we must do our best to get the best possible team for the British tour. The selectors have been asked to select 15 players only to meet the tourists, and this rill reduce your objections to a certain extent. We trust that the playing of thi ß match will not unduly affect the playing of the North v. South match to be played at Dunedin on September 29." Mr Douglas Spedding said that the fixtures for the season had been arranged at the annual meeting of delegates. They had arranged for a trial match in the South Island and a trial match in the North Island, and a North v. South Island trial match at Auckland. Then there was the North v. South Island match to be played at Dunedin on September 29. There had been no mention at the annual meeting of delegates regarding any other match. The Management Committee had evidently taken it on themselves to arrange the match without consulting the unions. Mr O'Shea: Evidently it is meant that the people of New Zealand are the people of Wellington. .If any privileges are going they get them. Mr Spedding said it seemed rather strange that the Management Committee should take so long to reply to their letter, and then they were told that arrangements had been made. Mr Jolly: They, do as they like with us. i The letter was received. REPORTS BY MANAGERS.
Mr D. M. Stuart, manager of the Otago team which played at Invercargill on Saturday, submitted a report of the tour. The game had been a close one, he said, and the Otago team had staged a fine rally towards the finish of the game. He understood that some £SBO had been taken at the gates.—lt was decided to write and thank the Southland Union for the hospitality exjtended to the Otago team.
Mr S. G. Styehe reported on the visit of the Pirates A Second Grade team to Outram on Saturday to meet a team from the Taieri Plain Sub-union. The weather, said Mr Styehe, had been fine. The subunion team had been quite a strong one, and its forwards were a little heavier than the Pirates pack. When the teams had taken up their positions it was discovered that there was no ball to play with.— (Laughter.) A ball had, however, been secured, and a good even game iiad resulted. He had, indeed, been surprised at the form displayed by the sub-union
team, especially .as it was the first appearance of the players together. Pirates had won by 6 points to 3 points, a penalty goal and a try to a penalty goal.—Mr Styehe was thanked for his report. REFEREES FOR SATURDAY'S MATCH.
