Mr W. J. Morrell was a passenger by the express yesterday morning, en route to Wellington, where he will attend a meeting of the executive of the Senate, of the University of New Zealand. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that among the passengers by the Aorangi, which left Sydney yesterday for Auckland, were Sir George Tallis, Mr H. H. Sterling (chairman of the New Zealand Railways Board), Miss Jean Batten, and Mr C. P. Ulm. Leave of absence during *the parliamentary session was granted to Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., and' P. Jones, M.P., at the meeting of the 'Otago Harbour Board last night. Mr P.' E. Tyson was also granted leave of absence for two months, though the chairman (Mr H. C. Campbell) stated that Mr' Tyson hoped to be able to attend the meetings before the end of that period. • A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the reappointment of Sir James Gunson (Auckland) and Mr D. Reese (Christchurch) as members of the Government Railways Board for. a further period 'of two years was announced in the Gazette last evening. The reappointments are effective as from June o .. J.-
Mr G. R. M'Kenzie, late proprietor of the Ritz, was entertained at the Buffalo Hall on Wednesday by a gathering of ,some 50 friends prior to his departure to take up his residence in Wellington and presented with a solid silver cigarette case, suitably inscribed. Members of the Dunedin Gun Club, the Masonic Lodge, and other personal friends expressed regret at Mr M'Kenzie's departure from Dunedin. ,
At last night's meeting of the Otago Harbour Board the chairman (Mr H. C. Campbell) made reference to the lontr and valuable service of Mr Donald Cameron, who had latelv retired from the reporting staff of the Otago Daily Times, and also had been a familiar figure at the meetings of the board, Other members also paid tributes to Mr work. and to his personal qualities,' and it wag decided to extend to him the board's greetings and best wishes.
